William Harrison Ainsworth (1805-1882) was a prolific English historical novelist born in Manchester. Noted for his lively portrayals of dramatic events and historical personages, Ainsworth achieved a rapt readership in his time, with a style that wove gothic elements into historical narratives. His foremost fame came from 'Rookwood' in 1834, which featured the highwayman Dick Turpin, and 'Jack Sheppard' in 1839, a novel based on the life of a notorious criminal, which became the subject of controversy due to its perceived glorification of crime. His novel 'Preston Fight; or, The Insurrection of 1715' adds to his body of work by delving into the Jacobite uprising of 1715, offering both an intriguing storyline and a rich portrayal of the period. Ainsworth's career spanned over four decades, during which he wrote over 40 novels, contributing significantly to the development of the historical fiction genre. Despite his early popularity, his star waned in the later parts of the 19th century, as literary tastes shifted and criticism of his romanticized view of history grew. Nevertheless, his works still provide valuable insight into 19th-century historical novel writing and are remembered for their engaging storytelling and depth of historical detail.
