MORE DIRTY WORK Det. Pete Young, at 23 still the youngest detective in South Australian police history, faces his biggest challenge to date. He's about to cop what every dick worth his salt needs - an Arch Nemesis - namely, Chad Oldman - social security recipient, reality TV addict, and cover-band member. He's going to prove to be a tough nut to crack. On the side - a bunch of anonymous texters put the squeeze on a comely continental celebrity chef while a covert surveillance team member cooks up a cool recipe for blackmail. There's MORE DIRTY WORK than ever and as usual - that's just the humans. The hard-boiling continues.

FOUR

Department of Social Security, 123 Currie Street, Adelaide, second floor, Covert Surveillance section C, Investigative Unit 4.

Input 59’s overnight output scrutiny continues.

‘Sounds like the TV’s on now’ says Mel. ‘Connie’s Bitchin’ Kitsch’n’

‘7food network’ says Gene. ‘You a fan?’

‘Love her’

‘Really?’

‘Oh yeah. She’s awesome’

‘So who’s watching? Al? Murry?’

‘Maybe Chad’

Connie: ‘Today I’ll be doing my classic putanesca sauce so first get your grill going; we’ll need that nice and hot later. Me piace caldo! Next, pop your pot on the stove. Get that water boiling. The sauce won’t take long. Now, two cloves of garlic, one red onion, fresh parsley, chop…..’

Murry: ‘Jesus Christ, Dennis, do you have to watch that muck? Can’t you turn that Connie creature off? She’s giving me a headache’

Click.

Murry: ‘That’s better. A man can hear himself think. Any-

way, anyone can make a putanesca sauce, what’s the big deal? Now Dennis, this attempt of yours to frighten some coin out of that putana’s almost as pathetic as Al’s bank job. What the hell’s got into you boys? Armed robbery not enough for you now? Need to break into the standover racket too, do we? It’s Audree. She’s ruined the lot of you’

Silence.

Murry: ‘Dennis? Cat got your tongue, too?’

Silence.

Murry: ‘Lost for words, Den?’

Silence

‘Leave him alone dad. Stop picking. You know Dennis doesn’t like to talk much’

‘Hello’ says Mel. ‘New voice’

‘Chad?’ says Gene.

Murry: ‘Blimey, look who’s bothered to show up. Hope it wasn’t too much trouble. Obviously we’ve not been good enough for him up ‘til now. It’s Brian! To what do we owe? You behind Al’s lame-brain crack at armed robbery and your dopey brother Dennis’ appalling attempt at a poor-excuse for a half-baked stab at extortion? I wouldn’t mind betting you’re the ideas man here, Brian, considering Dennis and Al couldn’t tie their own shoelaces’

‘Sweeter, too, I’d say’ says Mel.

‘Who?’ asks Gene.

‘The one they call Brian. Cute voice’

‘And calling Murry dad’

‘And Dennis brother’

‘But still no Chad’

‘No’

‘Better tag him’ says Gene.

‘Was just about to’ says Mel. VRS 3. Brian.

Murry: ‘Alright, turn that stupid cooking show back on if you have to. I reckon you’re fixated on that Connie woman. You’d have to put the blame for this sickness squarely on Audree’s shoulders. This type of unhealthy obsession’s all her doing. A direct result of all that namby-pamby pandering’

Click.

Connie: ‘Now that they’re all in the bowl, it’s time to get those red capsicums roasting. Li vogliamo nero! Brush over with your extra virgin olive o…’

Murry: ‘Okay, that’s enough. Sorry I said turn it back on. Honestly, I can’t make out what you boys see in her. Anyway, we can’t carry on a meaningful discussion wi…..’

Click.

Murry: ‘Thank god for that’

Brian: ‘Dad, seriously, you’re not being particularly constructive. Actually, unhelpful’s what I’d say. It’s very difficult to be creative in this atmosphere of hostility, dad, really. Very, very bad vibrations’

Murry: ‘I’ll give you a vibration. You behind all this robbery and extortion stuff, Brian? You talk those two ninnies into attempting those crazy capers? What the hell are you playing at, son?’

Brian: ‘Just wanting to help Al, dad’

Murry: ‘For a sex-change? Brian, he’s not even family!’

Brian: ‘As good as, dad’

Murry: ‘As good as my boot! It’s Audree. I tell you, she ruined you boys’

Brian: ‘Don’t pick on mum, dad’

Murry: ‘Have you boys gone loco or something?

Brian: ‘Dad, you need to stop talking for a bit. I can’t think straight with all your negativity. It hurts my brain. Would you mind? A bit of quiet? I need to talk to Dennis’

Murry: ‘Good luck getting a word out of him. Butter wouldn’t melt in his mouth. His mothers favourite’

Brian: ‘I always thought Carl was’

Murry: ‘Could be; you’ve all been spoiled rotten. It’s high time you boys forgot this criminal carry-on and knuckled down to some hard work for a change and do as I tell you. Enough with all this needy Al nonsense. Al schmal. Sex-change! What next? What’s he going to call himself? Al-ice? Al-annah? Oh Lord, where did I go wrong? Give me a break. I blame Audree, I really do. Your mother mollycoddled you boys something shocking. You little darlings couldn’t do a thing wrong. That’s Audree; she’s undermined me since day one’

Silence.

Murry: ‘BRIAN!’

Silence.

Murry: ‘DENNIS!’

Silence.

Murry: ‘Like talking to yourself. I don’t know why I bother. Go on; turn that stupid cooking show back on for all I care. You lot’d rather watch her than listen to your father’

Click.

Connie: ‘Okay, your water’s boiling, your caps are roasting, your garlic, onions, and parsley are chopped and bowled. Next? What about a glass of Chianti? Not for the sauce, for me! So, into the bowl with your tuna, your handful of black olives, and a cup of extra virgin olive oil. Mix it all up, baby! Not too rough. Don’t want to break up those tuna chunks altogether, do we?’

Murry: ‘Sorry. I know I said put her back on but it’s sending me bananas. Can one of you clowns kill that television? Can’t sleep with that on all the time. A man can’t hear himself think’

Connie: ‘Those caps are black now so let’s get ‘em out, scrape ‘em down, chop ‘em up and bowl ‘em with the rest. Hey? That water look boiling to you? Lo fa per me’

Murry: ‘Come on guys, turn it off!’

Click.

Silence.

Murry: ‘Now, isn’t that better?

‘What do you think’?’ says Mel.

‘About the sauce?’ says Gene.

‘About the guys in flat five’

‘Maybe we should take some notes’

‘Good idea’

Gene jots down the main points, so far.

1/ Haven’t heard from Chad yet because Chad’s not there.

2/ Haven’t heard from Chad yet because, although he may be there, he just hasn’t said anything because he’s either:

a) Dead.

b) Bound and gagged.

c) Really mute, in which case his application for disability support pension should go through no problem.

d) Had nothing to say. The quiet type, like Dennis.

3/ Regardless of Chad being either 1/ or 2/ a), b), c), or d), four individuals, by name, Murry, Al, Dennis and Brian seem to be holing up at flat five, and involved in some sort of caper in order to fund their good friend Al’s gender re-assignment. Brian’s the ideas man, Murry blames Audree, and Dennis is a danger to society.

4/ Or, C. Oldman has sub-let his flat out to criminal gang, and, is either not there and so unaware, or is there but remaining silent. (Refer 2/ a) b) c) or d).

‘We really need to report this, Gene’ says Mel. ‘Like right away. This is serious stuff. These guys are criminals’

‘No question of it’ says Gene. I’ll go and see Mia right now’

‘Great. These guys give me the horrors’

Gene heads on out in the direction of Mia’s office.

Mel gets on with it. After all, the day is still young and there are plenty of other suspect recordings to check out. There’s taxpayers dollars to save. That peeved, piqued and put-upon SSI up the gumtree’s got just the one thing she’s thinking about saving, and that’s her own...
