Jeremy Meyers is an ordinary bratty twelve-year-old when he has his first prophetic dream. He is too shy to tell anyone at first, but he can see things happening in the world around him that connect to the dreams. Clouds that are narrow strips in the sky, seem to affect trees and animals. But why is he seeing flying saucers? Later, when Mom takes him, his brother Simeon, and sister Anna on a field trip as part of a home school project, the big picture begins to take shape. Living in Silicon Valley, they see unique companies like 'Weather Wise', and 'Action Surgical' that he can apply directly to his dreams. Jeremy begins to share his dreams with his best friend, Thomas, then his Dad. Now he is fourteen and has just scraped together the nerve to say hi to the girl he likes when God calls him to preach. This sends him into a tailspin. A vision gives him some relief when he sees himself preaching online rather than in person. The family finishes building their home at the lake just before WWIII turns the world upside down, and most of his family heads for the hills, and their place at the lake. Jeremy is in for many more surprises as his family puts together a new life in a very different time and place.
Chapter 6:
Shalom
I pulled the covers close and turned over as another dream began.
I was outside looking at a farm. My attention was drawn to the barn as a great door opened. I drew closer to have a look. Inside. Sickly horses with ugly sores whinnied pathetically and collapsed.
With a blink I was in the air viewing a large city with freeways full of traffic. The masses of cars and trucks thinned to a trickle, then all was quiet. There was no traffic at all.
I awoke feeling troubled and shook my head at yet another dream of doom. I hoped God would shine some light on these dreams and soon. They were disturbing.
Dad had been working on the family van all Sunday afternoon between church services. Simeon and I helped a little. It needed a tune up to be ready for our first trip to the property at the lake. As we washed up in the utility room, Mom came in and asked, “Did you boys tell your father about the president?
“Are you kidding?” Simeon said. “It was the first thing we talked about.”
“It could be.” said Dad. “We need to do some more research, but this is a possibility. The pope is acting more like the false prophet all the time.” He turned to Mom. “Did you hear he is saying Muslims are saved? He’s even talking about aliens. He says beings from another galaxy may not be fallen like we are. Pretty soon he’ll be saying everyone is saved except born-again believers in Jesus Christ.” He paused a moment. “I think Brother Baxter is right. The pope is going to be the false prophet the Bible talks about.” Seeing the stricken look on Mom’s face, he went on. “Remember, no matter what is happening in the world, the name of the Lord is a strong tower.” Dad caught sight of the clock on the wall. “Looks like it’s time we get ready for church.”
We turned to go, but Mom stopped us. “Oh, before I forget, before the boys went to help you, I had them dig a grave for Bentley in the backyard. Do we have time to let the kids say good-bye to Bently before we go?”
“If we hurry,” he answered.
“And Neph?” Mom looked up at Dad.
“Yes.”
“I want to take the dogs to the vet tomorrow. I’m worried about them.” She began to chew a fingernail.
“Sure, honey. What’s wrong?” Dad moved closer and put his hand on her back.
Mom took a deep breath. “Fonzie scratches so much he makes himself bleed, and they both have lumps growing in different places on their bodies.”
“I’ve noticed the scratching but didn’t know it was that bad. I sure hope it doesn’t cost a fortune.”
On the way to church, I looked out the window at all the traffic. It made me think of my dream. My eyes drifted to the sky. Then I saw another UFO. Before I could stop myself, I shouted, “Hey, look!”
“What?” asked Simeon.
Feeling nervous, I responded, “Oh, nothing.”
But Anna whispered, “I saw it too.”
I exhaled, and we gave each other a conspiratorial smile. To further hide the reason for my exclamation I added, “Sure is a lot of traffic, huh, Dad?”
Dad grunted.
“Do you think we’ll ever get one of those electric cars?” Beth asked.
“No way!” Dad answered with more feeling than expected.
“Why not?” Beth wanted to know. “I think they’re pretty cool, and gas is so expensive.”
“Because my dear,” Dad explained, “they give off more radiation than getting an X-ray.”4
“What? I never heard that,” she answered suspiciously. “You’re kidding, right?”
“No, I’m not kidding. I bought me a new toy the other day. It measures radiation. I got it just in case our country is attacked. I will be able to tell if it is an EMP or a nuke. But I am finding out we have so much radiation around us already.”
“So, that’s the gadget I saw you putting on all our appliances, huh, Dad?” asked Debbie.
“Right, I’ve been checking things everywhere. Our microwave, our van, our refrigerator. You wouldn’t believe it. Well, the other day I checked my friend’s little electric car, and the thing zoomed off the chart. I checked into it, and those lithium-ion batteries can explode. I don’t want any of us to be inside one of those cars.”
Dad parked at the curb in front of the little church, and I ran to join Brooke’s family as they approached the front door. Bounding ahead, I gallantly opened the door, then gave an exaggerated bow as I waved them inside. When Brooke went by, I made a silly face and she gave me a shy smile, which sent my spirits into the stratosphere. It had taken months for her to even look at me. I didn’t know what had happened last year while her family was gone, but she had come back different. She was withdrawn and sad, and that made me sad when I thought about it. I had been determined to make her smile again, and she just did!
That night Pastor Tom David preached about an imperfect world and the need for a perfect Savior. I was surprised to hear that a day is not precisely 24 hours long. I hadn’t thought about the fact that a year was not exactly 365 days. Leap year was goofy enough, but the Hebrew calendar added a whole month every thirteen years! Now, that’s weird.
Then the pastor began telling about how Jesus was the perfect Lamb, wow, the Spirit of God moved. I felt the hair on my neck stand up and goose flesh on my arms. Everyone around me began crying and praying. The preaching was over, and God’s Spirit took control. I was one of the many to receive a renewing of the Holy Ghost. I spoke in an unknown language for at least an hour and was feeling on top of the world.
In the cheerful banter on the way home from church, I just had to ask, “OK, so we might be having World War Three and have to bug out to the country any time now, right?”
Dad nodded. “That’s possible.”
“So how can we be so happy?”
It got quiet in the van, and Dad answered, “We can only see the signs of the times, Son. We can’t name the day or the hour, so, in the meantime, we may as well enjoy the time we have.”
Grandma spoke up. “Shalom, Jeremy. Do you know what that means?”
“It means ‘peace,’ I think,” I answered.
“Right, very good. It is the peace of God. It also means completeness. I think God has some special peace for those of us who are here at the end of the age when He completes His plan.”
“What do you mean, ‘completes His plan’?” asked Anna.
Grandma thought for a moment, then answered, “The Bible says God knows the end from the beginning, right, Anna?”
Anna nodded.
“Well, God lets us know a little bit about his plan.” Grandma Gladys began to tick the ways off on her fingers. “We know Jesus will return like He went away. That means in the clouds. No one will pick Him up at the airport. He is coming special delivery, and His feet will touch down on the Mount of Olives in Jerusalem. This will happen during the battle of Armageddon.”
She held up a second finger. “We know when He returns, all the Jews will see the scars in His hands, and their eyes will be opened, and they will know He is their Messiah.”
A thumb was added to the two fingers for number three. “We know He will come with ten thousands of his saints”—a radiant smile came to Grandma’s face—“to wipe out evil from the world, and then there will be a thousand years of peace.” Grandma looked at Anna. “That’s His plan.”
“But before all that, there are some bad times coming called the tribulation. If we hold on to Jesus, he will see us through the bad times so that we make it to the good times. So,” she finished, “God has given us an extra dose of peace in the troubled time we live in.”
We began to feel some of that peace fill the van. Smiles appeared on faces. Dad started singing “Peace, Peace, Wonderful Peace” and everyone joined in.
We felt God’s sweet Spirit all the way home.
It was after 11 p.m. when we arrived home. Later than usual because of the wonderful move of God. We wanted to linger in God’s presence. God’s Spirit was so sweet, no one wanted to leave. Once home, we gathered in the kitchen for a quick snack before bed. I was the last one to get my toast. Most of the family had already gone to bed when I headed to the bathroom. When I came out of the bathroom, the house was dark and quiet except for talking in my parent’s room. As I passed their room on my way to my own bedroom, I could hear a video playing. I paused to listen. “If you hear the banks say that they have a virus and must close until it is fixed, that is your cue. You have seventy-two hours to bug out and take everything you need with you.”
Now I was hooked. The video stopped and my parents’ voices continued.
Mom asked, “Do you have any idea what we should take?”
“I think I am going to need a little more than Boy Scout knowledge. A trip to the library might be a good idea.” Then Dad said, “On second thought, a...
