Very simply, it was time to bring back Hunter Thompson. The question was what would he do? I thought he would enjoy coming back as a Nazi hunter. Something he would be good at. A commitment he would gladly make. So I have given him that opportunity. And guess what. He does not disappoint. He is 100% on board, along with his childhood friend Jordan. Non je ne regrette rien. No regrets. This book is a memorial to the real Nazi hunters who dedicated their lives to finding the war criminals of the Third Reich who escaped justice at the end of World War II. Their efforts have been herculean. Thank God. They have shown the world the level of commitment needed to bring war criminals to justice.

Chapter 2

Buenos Dias Puerto Rico

We met the next morning at El Duque. We had breakfast with Tom in the employee mess area. That was okay. We had our privacy and we needed it.

“Tom, really, they’re out in the open, just like you say?” Hunter asked. “In the liquor industry and food distribution?”

“That’s right. Love it or leave it. They’re there.

“They are major players in the rum market. Same with food. But maybe we focus on one group at a time. I’d say first up go after the rum runners.

“All of these rum culprits are from the Neutzner (pronounced Noytzner) gang. Basically SS officers from Stuttgart.

“They never should have left Stuttgart. For generations they ran stud farms for war horses. But they fell for that Third Reich total BS about making money providing horses for troops.”

Anyway, Tom said there were people in Puerto Rico who were positioned to help us. He had a few clever ideas about how to get in the door to meet the rum barons.

“Franz is the key man. He changed his name and is now called Avedra Ducero, President of Rico Rum which has the third largest sales of rum in the world.”

Tom kept calling him Franz. He obviously knew him.

“We went to school together in my younger days when I studied mountaineering in Switzerland. We were at Grindelwald School at the same time and sort of became climbing buddies.”

“It distresses me to think I could have pushed him off a matterhorn and done the world a favor,” Tom said.

“Or cut his rope on a glacier,” Hunter said.

“But no one knew,” Tom said. “So that’s why we’re here today. Franz owes a debt to humanity for which he must atone. And you men will collect on the debt.”

“Agreed. Let’s get this plan together and put our show on the Puerto Rico road.” Hunter said.

It was an elaborate plan. We would go as potential investors for the rum business. Although we were said to be part owners of Claiborne Farm in Paris, Kentucky, we also had the distinction of being connected to the labor rackets in New Jersey. Hunter was Kentucky and I was Jersey. My family was connected. And we partnered in business ventures.

Our entry into Puerto Rico rum business would be established by our affiliation with Claiborne Farms. That’s what would open the doors with the rum Nazis. They also liked our angle that tied into the labor rackets. There was strong desire at rum central to put a stop to the endless labor strikes affecting rum production. No problem. We could help. That’s what we do. In fact, Tom arranged for us to travel with some supposed labor bosses that met with the production union people during our financial meetings with the Neutzner family. They were an intimidating presence. We advised the top labor representatives that our involvement in the rum business had the goal of making Rico an employee-owned business. Sooner rather than later, so be prepared for the transition. Consult with your attorneys and a friendly bank. The Duceros do not know they are going to be disenfranchised, so be discreet but act with all deliberate speed.

When we met the rum family consortium, they all spoke English and Spanish, but the German accent was quite pronounced. No attempt to hide their Germanness. Except now they were the Ducero family. All Duceros. And they were rich. Sold rum all around the world.

Their ad agency reps were at the business offices the same day. It may have been a coincidence as far as the Duceros knew, but Tom was clear we would be assisted in our efforts, so we figured there was some connection with the ad folks. When we heard who they were, the New York ad group SWB (Schneiderman Weiss Blumkin), we were more than suspicious. But it was just a guess at first.

When we met the Blumkin brothers, it became clear to me that my tribal brothers were going to be working with us.

“Lou and Bob, these are the investor folks from Kentucky’s Claiborne Farms. They want to get involved in the rum business and eventually tie it into the racing world. Like sponsorships for Kentucky Derby and big races. Natural tie in, you know,” Mr. Ducero said.

“This is Trevor Stack and T.J. Obrien. Can you show them around and show them the new campaign you just completed. I think that will help the boys understand what we see for the brand and product development. Then we’ll meet at noon in the executive dining room.”

As we were getting the royal tour, we then went to the film room. “It’s an honor to meet you boys. Tom was one of our most reliable intelligence sources in France during the war. Both of us were in Europe during the war,” Louie said.

“I rode with Patton as an aide. Bob was a Ranger in the Army and was at D-Day in Normandy and then the Battle of the Bulge, “ Louie noted.

“You boys have been around,” Hunter said. “I guess you know what we’re up to. Just seeking to bring some justice to parts of the world.”

“They’ll reap what they sow,” Bob Blumkin said.

“They will,” I added.

“What kind of name is Jordo?” Louie asked.

“Just a nickname. Full name is Jordan Jarvey Josin. We had an Uncle Harvey, so I got a J instead of an H.”

As the film started to play showing the campaign for Rico Rum, we were able to confer and confederate about our plan and scheme. We needed the ad guys to help pull off the plan. They would lose a major client if we succeeded, but the Blumkins were fine with that. They were intensely interested in punishment to the former SS bastards.

We knew a plan to destroy this rum company was going to be discussed. And it was, although the volume of our conversations was too low for anyone else to hear, just in case there was any eavesdropping.

We delivered to the ad brothers the necessaries for our caper to work. Basically, we wanted them to double label the bottles of rum coming through production. After several weeks the cover label would fall off and the purchaser of the rum would only see the final label:

Fine rum made by members of the SS and part of the Third Reich.

Another label read:

This rum made in Puerto Rico at Rico Rum by the Famous Nazi Family, the Neutzners, who own Rico Rum.

It turns out there were maybe ten different messaged labels. All of them made the same point. Rico was Nazi. The idea explained to us by Tom was that if we did our job, the plan would take care of the Nazi Neutzners. So that’s the way it went. Our big effort was convincing the Blumkin boys that this should be done. And, as noted, there wasn’t much convincing needed. Those brothers were all in.

They fought in WW II, and Bob and Louie both knew about the evil that haunted us. It haunted them too.

Another label read:

This bottle produced by some of the most evil bastards to ever live: Owners of Rico Rum. True Nazis. Members of the SS, The Neutzners.

There was some question about the logistics, but Bob and Louie assured us they knew this label trick. They had used it in business, generally for pranks and gags – even for birthdays.

They knew exactly how the double label trick would work. They even knew exactly when and where. Of course, the key was timing the label exposure to distribution. It wouldn’t do much good if the Rico label came off while the product was still in the warehouse.

At Rico Rum, the labels were not put on the bottles until right before shipment. The rum distillate was aged in oak barrels after fermentation and distillation.

After labeling, the rum from Rico went all over the world. That was why Rico was so successful, world distribution, not just the Caribbean and Latin America.

All of which was good for us because once the rum was shipped from Puerto Rico, the end of these Nazis would be a sure thing. There would be no way to limit or control the damage to this Nazi family and its rum business.

Really, the only question would be how would the whole thing go down.

Frankly, we didn’t care. We knew our plan was good. And that was how justice would be served.

After our due diligence at company headquarters, we advised the company men we would have our accountants confer with theirs and try to get the deal done.

“We like what we see. Everything is in order, “ Hunter (TJ O’Brien) said. “We hope to be back soon to secure our interest.”

We didn’t need the details of this Nazi family’s demise. We had more work to do. So after the Rico plan was put into action it was time to move on to the rest of the Nazis in Puerto Rico.

The other band of Nazis was also in San Juan City. They were easy to find. And, like the Neutzners, they were big business. Largest food distributor in the Caribbean and Central America: Del Ponte. The name was not intended to mean anything. It was copied from a similar sounding name of a canned goods company in America. The Kramers were like their rum cousins. Changed their names to blend in. And Kramers...
