Included in the collection are copies of original handwritten drafts as well as original typewritten drafts from his Olivetti-Underwood typewriter. Each poem is accompanied by a brief commentary about the circumstances of its composition and the year it was written.
Introduction
I thought everyone wrote poetry—my friends, my family, my classmates, new people I met, people I never knew. I always thought each of them, like me, had a tattered black gym bag that was the receptacle of innermost thoughts written on notepads, envelopes, loose-leaf binder paper, torn spiral notebook pages, napkins and random scraps of paper.
At some point I learned most people don’t write down their experiences as they happen and certainly not in a poetic sense. Perhaps I was going through a phase in my late teens and twenties yet I continued to add to my gym bag—one poem at a time until now—and I continue on.
Through the years I would pull out my Olivetti typewriter and compile my poems in some order. Computers had me organizing them again in the 80’s, and again, and again.
These poems, these expressions of my heart, mind, and soul, became my best friends. Each poem reflects a moment in time for me and was written in real time over 50 years. Included in this collection are copies of original handwrittendrafts as well as original typewritten drafts from my Olivetti typewriter. Each poem is accompanied by a brief commentary aboutthe circumstances of its composition and the year it was written.
My hope is for you to find and enjoy a friendship with one of my poems—perhaps a phrase or a line or a feeling. My hope is you will create your own expression via the world of words. My hope is we all will learn the exact meaning of words so we can understand each other better.
