Michelle McNamara (1970-2016) was the author of the website TrueCrimeDiary.com. She earned an MFA in fiction writing from the University of Minnesota and had sold television pilots to ABC and Fox, and a screenplay to Paramount. She also worked as a consultant for Dateline NBC. She lived in Los Angeles and is survived by her husband, Patton Oswalt, and their daughter, Alice.

McNamara was a gifted US journalist who died before she could finish this classy and gripping true crime thriller in which she investigates a chilling unsolved case which came to obsess her for decades. The Golden State Killer was a mysterious and violent predator during the '70s and '80s who perpetrated fifty sexual assaults in Northern California and then moved south to commit 10 sadistic murders, before vanishing without trace. McNamara was determined to unmask this violent psychopath and her book, which was completed by her research assistants, may yet help to do just that.
