Duncan Waynewright's odyssey continues. The puzzles he and Jared solve begin to dilate and to breed exponentially more mystery. Duncan is taken on a tour deep inside his own consciousness where the extreme personal nature of all that has transpired is revealed to him. Walter Davies, aware that Duncan and Jared are inching towards awareness of his true mission at Junction Lake, welcomes his employees into a secret and cryptic world. Jared's intuitive breed of ribald humor helps Duncan maintain a sliver of sanity even as Mia's own otherworldly experiences multiply. Jared's wife, Janette, and Mia develop a profound and inexplicable connection and Janette admits she's been keeping arcane secrets her entire life. The two couples go on a quest to find out if their shared encounters are happening by chance or if it is all being orchestrated by something not of this world. They yearn to know the basis of the connection they all share with each other. Duncan seeks to find out why he and Wade are the only ones who have been privileged to meet the bizarrely magnificent woman of their dreams and if she even really exists. He and Wade further wish to know why she's here, if what she's been telling them is true, and why Duncan finds her so hauntingly familiar. When the Waynewrights and Wilsons-and all their children-are invited for dinner at the Davies' house up at Junction Lake, some of these wishes come true. But nothing can prepare them for what they get for dessert.
When I arrived outside Walter’s office, Jared was sitting in one of the rocking chairs on the front porch looking very relaxed. “Nice of you to show up, brotha. I guess you and Walter decided to be fashionably late?”
“Walter’s not here?” I responded, feeling somewhat relieved that I was not the only late one.
“Ya think he forgot ’bout us?”
“No way. I just saw him. We were talking about a new patio he wants to build.”
“New patio? Cool. And there he his,” Jared nodded toward the front gate as Walter briskly walked through it, deftly handling three large coffees in a cardboard cup holder.
“Now, if you’re gonna be late, it is always nice to show up with something in your hand,” Walter said, giving us his patented wink. “Three large coffees. One for each of my two very welcome guests, and one for myself.”
“Now thank you, my good man,” Jared said, springing up to help Walter with the coffees. Walter waved him off, balancing the cup holder with one hand.
“Yeah, thanks Walter,” I added. “I was actually craving some coffee but I was running too late to stop by the kitchen.”
“No need for thanking me, boys. I usually have some java right about now anyway, so part of this gesture is a little bit selfish. I would’ve put on a pot myself, but I just can’t get it to taste as delicious as the coffee from the kitchen.”
“Yeah, the coffee from the kitchen always delivers some very tasty caffeine,” I concurred as I reached for the large sized to-go cup in the holder that he pushed my way.
“And here you are, Jared. A nice afternoon pick-me-up for my indispensable ride engineer with his dashing cowboy hat.” Walter opened the front door and led us inside. “As you know from knowing me, Jared, I enjoy sporting a nice hat myself every now and then. And I do have quite a respectable collection back at my home. A man can never have too many hats, if you ask me.”
“Amen to that. Cheers, my good men,” Jared replied, raising his coffee as if it were a cocktail. Walter didn’t notice the gesture so Jared just peeled back the plastic flap on the lid and took a cautious sip. “Ah, just right.”
Walter led us through the open double doors into his office. Jared and I simultaneously glanced up at the old black and white, enlarged, framed photo of the Crystal Beach Cyclone—positioned dead center above the office doorway. Jared shot me a smile and a nod at the image, which wholly implied, How cool is this guy?!
Walter turned towards us and motioned for us to each take a seat. He walked around his desk and placed the cup holder in a small basket that sat on a lower shelf of one of his bookcases, informing us that the basket was for his cardboard and paper recyclables and stressing to us the importance of recycling—a fact we already knew but which was heavily enforced at Junction Lake. Walter took a sip from his coffee and then sat himself down in his imposing desk chair.
“Alright now, where to start...where to start?” Walter stroked his goatee as he habitually did and squinted his piercing, powder blue eyes. He continued to ponder his opening line for a few more moments. “Now, I just want to say this once,” he finally uttered, “although I would not be sitting here with the two of you if I did not already have complete confidence in the both of you. The two of you have already stepped inside the doorway to a world within a world. Now. The problem is, the more you begin to understand, the more you may feel yourselves having difficulty in relating to most of our fellow humans. And that may include parents and brothers and sisters and friends.
“You may feel the need to make others believe or understand that this reality that we all so tenaciously think we understand is far, far more wondrous than what we are so pitifully led to believe. You may feel the need to enlighten the minds of those you love, and even those you barely know, as you may happen upon a conversation on any random day. As much as your hearts might desire to uplift those with whom you may cross paths, you will only wind up saddened and depressed, again and again, when you realize that it is far too late for so many of us. You will only awaken the anger and the fear that has been sown into us all. And you will come to the harrowing revelation that evil exists. You will see again and again how evil has poisoned the minds of legions of humanity, as you watch even the most supposedly pious of us spew vitriolic rhetoric in response to your overtures of uplifting intentions.
“Everyone can’t be saved from this insanity, and their souls will awaken in the hell that they have helped to create, as they so devoutly grasp at the dream that they are waking from. You are now part of a club, gentlemen. Call it a guild or an order or a society or an alliance or, even better, an emerging reality. You have both been chosen, as have your wives and children, to be part of something greater than any of us. I like to call it a family. And I would go to the utmost extremes to protect my family, as humanity bites down on its own umbilical cord, as humans react in fear to their own glorious rebirth. I don’t need any blood oath. Your initiations are going splendidly. I am not your savior, and neither are the many beings that you may encounter. We are all in this together, and much is being done behind the curtain of reality to guide our fellow humans into the light of the knowledge of what we really are.
“This kindergarten understanding of the reality of our souls has taken us as far as it can. We can’t stay here in the dark for much longer, telling ourselves that when we die we fly off to heaven and that is that—for that is only an inkling or a glimpse at the true nature of what our souls can experience.
“The alarm clock is about to sound, boys. The systems and lies that have helped to keep us locked away within ourselves—too distracted by our own lives to even notice how deeply we have fallen asleep at the wheel—will soon crumble away like the ruins of so many past civilizations. But this time—this time it will give way to a truth: a magnificent truth that can no longer be distorted and controlled—and kept hidden away for only a select few. There is no mother ship coming to our rescue, to take us to where we need to be—because we are already here. All eyes are upon us now, peering through the shadows and the dimensions that permeate our beings—waiting to find out just what makes us primitive little humans so special. Because surely we have not been deserving of such a divinely ordained and mysterious trait.
“They are all drawn to us by the beacon that is the light of our souls, pervading the known dimensions with a resounding signal that has not ever been detected before—calling out to these souls from other worlds to journey here to our world. Many are confounded by why they have come but they can all sense their connection with something that will soon emerge and reverberate through all that is and all that can be.
“My point, boys, is that what you have become aware of will be somewhat of a struggle to keep inside when you feel like you have the power to enlighten those you meet. There are just too many forces at play to be sounding off to anyone you may come across. You are both going to have to keep you’re your mouths shut...while things continue to unfold.
“Now, as I said, I would not be sitting here with the two of you if I didn’t already have complete confidence in the both of you. Think of Junction Lake as a sacred site, if you will. If certain dubious forces become aware of our little...enclave here—as they almost have—much of what has been done will be for naught. What you witnessed that night on the lake was one of these dubious forces.
“By now you must know that your own destinies are intertwined with the destinies of beings from other worlds. Be humbled by the providence that has privileged you by offering you a key to a door that many would kill for. But this key is nothing that can be taken. Enclaves have been set up all over this great planet of ours in great secrecy—with the help of our off-world friends and allies—to insure a means to an end. This has been going on for a very long time.
“Now know this: Your wives are part of you and so are your wonderful children. Secrets cannot be kept from those whom we love so dearly. Your efforts to bring them on board will be successful, I assure you. But your parents and brothers and sisters and friends will think you have gone and flipped your lids...if you try to enlighten them. This will be the hardest part of all that lies ahead. Take solace in the fact that as long as their souls are pure and their intentions are good, they will be afforded safe passage, as will all humans whose souls resonate with the larger whole, humans who are not hopelessly caught up in the confines of their extremely narrow belief systems.
“Unfortunately, the people who have already succumbed to the insanity of their dying belief systems are too many to fathom. They will fight a war within themselves, as well as a war outside themselves, as this may be the only remedy that can strip away the powerful indoctrinations that imprison these myriad souls who can no longer resonate with the bodies that they inhabit. So many will be unable to...
