In this eclectic treasure trove of characters, the author reveals a fascinating insight into some of the key personalities, events and ideas which, as the 20th century rose to its climactic finale, were destined to shape our world.
Of course he has interviewed many Russians: Khrushchev, Brezhnev, Kosygin, Yeltsin, Andropov, Gorbachev and Shevardnadze, but also their opposite numbers: Kissinger and Rice, and their allies: the Castros, Guevara, Ceausescu and Hönecker. Away from the front line of conflict and politics, we meet the Gandhis, Pope John Paul II, Lech Walesa, Yuri Gagarin and many others. And away from that Guseynov takes us within him on road trips around North Korea, Cambodia and Vietnam as they struggle to meet the real politics of the late 20th century.
Vagif Guseynov is a retired Major-General in the Russian Army. He started his career as a journalist, working on radio and television and editing a youth newspaper, before becoming the editor of Olympic Sport, Analytical Messenger and other titles. Later in his career he was First Secretary of the Azerbaijan Komsomol Central Committee, Secretary on International Questions of the All-Union Komsomol Central Committee, the Mayor of Baku, Azerbaijan, First Deputy Chief of Department in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the USSR. More recently he was the last Chairman of the KGB in Azerbaijan and a member of the Russian Council on Foreign and Defence Policy. He participated in meetings of the Aspen Group, the business forum Russia-EU, the Bergedorfer Forum, and Business Dialogue with the Bavarian Business Association. Throughout his career he has travelled extensively and met many of the men and women who have shaped, and are shaping, our world. The has written 12 books and many articles on political, economic and international matters. He now brings together recollections from a remarkable life in Remarkable Encounters.
