Fairfield, California
Liquid bullets fall relentlessly from the blackened sky as menacing winds blow. It’s uncommonly chilly for this region. ‘Why’d it have to rain today of all days?’ Is the thought racing thru Claire’s mind. Today’s one of those days when she wants to be as close to perfect as possible! Would’ve helped if Mother Nature had gotten the memo! She and Janet have a coveted appointment with the co-chair of ‘The Foundation’ for a presentation. They’ve devised a program to eradicate poverty (mental & economic) in the inner cities across the Americas and are seeking funding consideration. The Foundation’s a philanthropic group sponsored by the UBP, with billions in its coffers, that targets and assists various minority sound business plans and inventions with operational support and financing when traditional institutions fail to meet their needs.
CLAIRE TAMARUMARO gathers her umbrella, briefcase, visual aids and two shopping bags containing sample leaflets and pamphlets. Using her umbrella as a partial shield against the downpour and the wind she rushes from her car trying as best she can to protect her look from the weather, to the office door and hurriedly steps inside. She slips her umbrella into the tall vase, but not quick enough to avoid creating a path of water beads that’d flowed freely from its end. “A real mess out there huh?” comments Lauren the receptionist peering over the top of her work station. “That’s an understatement!” Claire returns clearly a bit agitated. “Is he here Laura?” she whispers. “They’re in the conference room Miss T.” “Thanks! Laura how do I look?” she inquires nervously. “Relax! Relax! You look good as usual! Take a deep breath and exhale.” Lauren instructs. (Her given name’s Lauren, but she answers to Laura too!) “Now go in there and do your stuff! I’m really hoping things work-out so that I can get that long overdue raise!” she taunts. Claire pats her hand gently on the ledge of Lauren’s station “Good-luck with that!” she quips. As she enters the conference room Janet’s standing in the rear next to the service chatting with a well- dressed gentleman whose face she cannot see, but she’d detected his aromatic scent! She places her baggage on a small table in the corner. Noticing Claire’s presence Janet smiles to him, “Excuse me for a moment.”
“Why of course.” She moves to her and sighs, “You’re right on time! I was running out of conversation.” Claire gives her a concerning glance, “What’s wrong?” “Nothing. Come on!” she urges cupping her elbow and guiding her over to where he stands. “Claire this is Michael Fenfox.” He smiles, extends his hand and comments, “The pleasure’s mine I assure you, Ms. Tamarumaro!” She accepts his hand and returns his smile, “Please call me Claire! It’s easier although you pronounced it correctly.” “Okay! Then I must insist you call me Michael!” She gives an approving nod accompanied and reluctant smile. He looks directly at her, “Your associate speaks v-e-r-y highly of you! As a matter of fact you’ve been the conversation since my arrival!” Claire gives her the ‘eye’ and a shy smile as she counters, “Janet really gets to me with that! She’s the gifted one! But what can I do? She’s my best friend and colleague!” The group chuckles. ‘Extraordinary!’ He ponders in amazement of their friendship and humbleness. They’re spiritually beautiful! Michael finds the conference room to be business elegant and quite comfortable! Claire retrieves samples of printed materials to be utilized in the promotion of the program and hands them to him. He’s seated across from Janet. Claire dims the lights via the control panel inset in the marble and glass table. The rhythmic sounds of drums and kalimba begins to fill the room. A colorful kente patterns fills the screen and the letters ‘SOCSO’ splashes into its midst in bold orange. SOCSO is the acronym for ‘SAVE OUR CHILDREN SAVE OURSELVES’. She begins her monologue.
The following’s the condense transcript:
The young are the progeny of any group! Thus its greatest asset. Yet at this time it’s not the reality for many. ‘Saving’ should and must start before the womb. We’ve a program that targets at risk youth and unmarried expectant fathers and mothers. This group we target for elimination thru intense educational workshops.
Rib A- The ‘village’ concept must be re-introduced. It’s time to get back to what’s beneficial to us as a group, a family, a couple, an individual and as beings. Once we rekindle the flame of brotherly love it will burn brightly again and spread as a wildfire.
Rib B- To educate and practice discipline year round education from kindergarten thru high school.
Rib C- Cultivation of intelligence. The goal’s to educate all to the third collegiate level within twenty-four months after successful completion of primary education.
Rib D- Military/Disciplinary Constructs. Everyone five years of age to sixty as long as they’re physically fit and able will be compelled to learn hand to hand combat, martial arts, weaponry and military strategies.
Rib E- To recruit all drop-outs
END OF SCRIPT
Michael begins applauding! He’s highly impressed! “The two of you have formulated an aggressive, but fundamental strategy for change and development. Your plan’s excellent! It’ll require a complex network to execute, but it’s achievable! I’ll submit my recommendation and vote to the chairman. I am hoping to get your project underway in…aah sixty days.” He states with a sparkle in his eyes and an approving smile. “I feel it only fitting that we christen our new alliance over dinner. Will you please join me at ‘Garvey’s’ this evening? Say 7:30?” he offers. Janet and Claire are in a momentary state of shock! Claire recovers first. “We’d be delighted! That’s very generous of you, Michael!” “Oh no! This will be a pleasure and a treat for me! I’ll send the car for you if you’ll provide me your addresses.” Claire scribbles the information on a piece of notepad paper and hands it to him. Michael rises from his seat, places the materials in his briefcase and looks to them, “I look forward to this evening! Good-day ladies!” He exits the room.
After he’s gone Janet and Claire eye each other again speechless for a moment! Then pinch each other as a reality check! “Claire did you hear what he said?” Small creases form into big smiles on their faces. “G-i-r-l! Yes! I heard! You heard! We heard correct! He not only gave us an unofficial thumbs-up, but invited us to ‘Garvey’s’ and he’s sending a car to pick us up! This is surreal!” (Garvey’s a premier eight star restaurant. Many of its clientele are rich and famous people, professionals and celebrities. It’s near impossible to get a reservation! The waiting list has a two month backlog and that’s for the VIP’s of the world! Neither of them have ever dined there despite their past acquaintances of means and status.) “Claire, I have a few matters that I must settle today. Hopefully I’ll be home by four.” “That sounds good! I’ll do the same.” They’re filled with excitement! Claire grabs her briefcase, hurries to the reception area and quickly dons her raincoat. Lauren notices her rush. “Is something wrong Claire? As she swiftly grabs her umbrella she answers, “Ask Janet!” She whisks away into the continuing rain. Lauren gets up from her station and raps lightly on Janet’s door and proceeds, “What’s going on?” she probes. “Michael Fenfox has approved our project a-n-d he’s invited us to dine at Garvey’s tonight! He’s sending the car for us!” relays Janet in a faux snobbish tone. “Shut the front door!” exclaims Lauren. “Do y’all need some back-up?” she teases. “N-o-o! We’re big girls!” Janet returns laughing. It’d been a good while since Lauren had seen her so bubbly! She smiles to herself as she exits her office.
It’s a little after two when Janet resolves the last matter demanding her immediate attention. She notices the flashing button indicating messages. There are four. The first three were calls of confirmation regarding final contract agreements. The fourth’s the voice of a man unfamiliar to her ear and his name Dr. Oka rang no mental bells. He requested a return call at her earliest convenience and left his number. She’ll attend to his call and the others tomorrow.
At 6:30 p.m. Claire’s intercom buzzes. It’s Mr. Monetti, the second shift security guard. He informs her that her transport’s arrived. She thanks him. Grabs her purse, takes a last glance into the hallway mirror, locks the door and continues down the hall. The double doors open as she approaches. “Good-evening, Ms. Claire! My name’s Byron.” Greets the smartly dressed chauffeur while offering his arm to her. Smiling she accepts and returns, “Good-evening!” The rear door stands open to receive her on the titanium colored, stretch Rolls Royce Ghost with translucent tires and titanium rims. Once she’s inside he secures her door, returns to the driver’s seat and pulls off to pick-up Janet. ‘Been around the world’ by Brian Culbertson streams thru the cavity as Claire takes in the opulence of the vehicle’s interior.
A small group of teenagers are playing hoops in the driveway. Other neighbors are pruning flowers and mowing their lawns. A group of men are gathered in sidewalk conversation and the newly-weds...
