But there was always something pulling him to test the boundaries - as a teenager he managed to get himself arrested on suspicion of drug possession on the way back from a gap year in India, and the experimentation didn't stop there. Yet for all the tales of acting in film, theatre and television, and the people he has known and worked with, there was once a darker side to John's story.For it was the descent into alcoholism that was to test him the most. It cost him his marriage and almost his sanity, even while his own battle with his demons allowed him to shape Nick Cotton into one of the most memorable soap characters of our times.Now, for the first time, John tells it as it is, in his own inspiring words: the highs and the desperate lows and how, finally, he conquered his addiction for good.

Autor

The actor, singer and writer John Altman was born in Reading, Berkshire, and made his film debut in 1979 in The First Great Train Robbery and, later that year, played George Harrison in the TV film Birth of The Beatles. He featured in several other films including Quadrophenia (1979) and An American Werewolf in London (1981), as well as appearing with Timothy Spall and Gary Oldman in the award-winning Channel 4 film Remembrance. He became a houshold name, however, when he appeared as Nick Cotton in the very first edition of the new BBC television series EastEnders in February 1985. He was to be a regular feature of the series from 1985 to 2009, and in October 2014 returned to the show after a five-year absence. His character was finally killed off in the episode aired on 19 February 2015, which marked the show's thirtieth anniversary.
His work for the stage has included touring the UK in 2002 as Billy Flynn in the long-running musical Chicago, and he has also appeared in pantomimes, while in 2010 he was part of the line-up of the long-established hard-rock band Heavy Metal Kids. He now lives in the Borough of Richmond, in south-west London.
