The story of an Egyptian farm worker as she tries to come to terms with the difficult circumstances of an arranged marriage which she does not want. The first authentic Arabic novel portrays and explores the customs and traditions of rural Egyptian society with sympathy, insight and understanding. The translation is crisp and clear, presenting for the appraisal of the English reading audience a pioneering work of modern Arabic literature. A must for anyone with an interest in Egyptian culture, and translated fiction.
Mohammed Hussein Haikal was born in 1888 in Kakr Ghannam, Egypt. At just 22 years of age, he wrote Zainab whilst studying Law at Sorbonne University in Paris. After returning to Egypt, he worked as a lawyer and then as a journalist, and later became the Minister of State for the Interior Ministry, and Minister of Education where he famously introduced several successful reforms.
