Scotlund Haisley, the founder and president of Animal Rescue Corps, has spent more than twenty-five years saving the lives of thousands of animals. Wearing a respirator mask for protection from the piercing ammonia that hangs in the air and with law enforcement officials at his side, he infiltrates puppy mills, animal fighting operations, and other large-scale cases of animal cruelty, freeing dogs, cats, horses, and other animals from a life of wire cages, filth, and starvation—and sending them on their way to loving, protective caregivers.

Filled with dramatic rescues, Compassion in Action is a gripping ride through the underworld of those who profit from the enslavement of animals. From dogs trained for fighting to emaciated horses to animals stranded during natural disasters, the author and his team save animals from heartbreaking conditions, changing attitudes—and laws—along the way. It is a story of hope for the most vulnerable among us.

Scotlund Haisley is the founder and president of Animal Rescue Corps, the director of the Washington Animal Rescue League, a former board member for the Humane Society, and the president of In Defense of Animals. His career highlights include raising six million dollars for the creation of the world's first completely cage-free animal shelter, and post-Katrina rescues of over one thousand animals. A tattooed, vegan father of three, he lives in Washington, DC. Richard Folkers began his career at the Associated Press in 1981 and followed this with twenty years at U.S. News & World Report. Today, he is a technology editor and in this capacity has worked for Marketplace Morning Report and Discovery, and has been interviewed on-air by CNN, Fox, NBC, All Things Considered, and numerous local media outlets. Since 2005, he has been on the media relations staff of a federal agency in the Washington area.
