This volume contains the spoken stories and anecdotes of Oscar Wilde.
Oscar Wilde is widely recognised as one of the greatest writers of the nineteenth century. Less well known but of equal genius was his extraordinary, unique gift for telling stories to his family, friends and acquaintances. Throughout his life he continued to entertain and enchant those around him at dinner parties, from the literary salons of London to the seedier pubs and inns where he used to hang out in later years. These stories and anecdotes he used to magic up from his own vivid imagination, gleaning his characters and settings from fairytales and fables as well as the Old and New Testament for inspiration. Wilde, a skilled raconteur, would often repeat and vary his tales, depending on the company and mood. For the first time these unique, magical stories have been brought together in one volume. Some were set down on paper by Wilde himself. Others were documented by friends, family and listeners at Wilde's table. All 60 stories have been painstakingly researched and carefully edited by Thomas Wright, with short informative introductions for each one, setting the scene and giving the context in which it was told.

Thomas Wright was educated at Oxford and is currently full-time research assistant for Peter Ackroyd. He has written various articles for the Sunday Telegraph, the Evening Standard and regularly reviews books for the Daily Telegraph.
