Virginia Overton baut aus gebrauchten Materialien großformatige Skulpturen: Aus Stahlträgern, Holzbalken, zerlegten Fahrzeugen oder Reklameschriftzügen montiert, schraubt und schweißt sie Arbeiten, in denen Materialästhetik auf Reflektionen über ökologische, soziale und ökonomische Fragen trifft. Ihre Werke eröffnen Bedeutungsräume zwischen Konstruktion und Dekonstruktion, zwischen (Bau-)arbeit und Kunst, zwischen Funktion und Symbol. Der Band zeigt in langen Fotoserien deren Entstehungsprozess bis hin zur Installation im Museum.

Virginia Overton creates large-format sculptures from scrap materials. She salvages steel girders and wooden beams from buildings, dismantles disused vehicles and advertising lettering and assembles, screws and welds these individual parts to create artworks in which material fidelity meets reflections on ecological, social and economic issues. Her works open spaces of meaning between construction and deconstruction, between (building) work and art, between function and symbol. This publication features extensive photographs of the artist creating her sculptures, following the process up to their installation in the museum.
