This open access book presents a dozen academic essays that variously discuss obscure films by Ingmar Bergman, or hitherto hidden characteristics of his work. This collection features chapters on films that have often been overshadowed by the more celebrated masterpieces in his filmography, as well as chapters that highlight characteristics of his artistic production that have not yet the critical attention they warrant. The authors explore nuances of Bergman s troubled mindset, the socio-political context that shaped his artistic vision, as well as filmic and semiotic elements of his work to create a novel perspective on the filmmaker s oeuvre. Through rigorous analysis and critical examination, this collection aims to further develop the profound impact and lasting significance of these films, offering a fresh perspective on Bergman s contributions to cinema. Unravelling the hidden depths of Bergman s artistry and examining the socio-political and psychological significance of his work this collection makes a substantial contribution to a new, emerging perspective on the work of the canonical filmmaker.
