If you’ve ever been to a museum, you’ve seen lots of paintings and sculptures of women . . . but where are the women artists? This accessible feminist guide to art history puts female artists in the picture

For the kind of students who always have hard-hitting questions on field trips, More Than a Muse follows students Jo and Ben who, on a visit to a museum, notice that there are lots of pictures of women made by men but hardly any art made by women. As they search through the museum for female artists, statues of Apollo and Artemis come to life to help them on their quest.

From Artemisia Gentileschi to Yayoi Kusama, this book covers female artists from all time periods and art movements, with gorgeous, illustrated biography pages and a fun narrative through line perfect for turning anyone into an art history aficionado. Authors Marion Augustin and Sara Colaone, working in partnership with in partnership with AWARE: Archives of Women Artists, Research & Exhibitions, provide compelling snippets of scenes from each artist’s life, explain the movement that each artist was a part of, and provide beautiful illustrated biography pages for quick reference. More Than a Muse is a must-read for any history buff, teacher, or aspiring artist.

Marion Augustin is an author of several graphic novel guides to art history in France, where she works as a tour guide at French museums and historical sites. This is her first graphic novel translated into English. Sara Colaone is a cartoonist, illustrator, and animator from Italy. She won third place in the Torino, Olympic City illustration competition, and her work has been exhibited in Naples, Bologna, Ljubljana, Ravenna, Lugano, and Vicenza. She teaches comics and illustration at the Bologna Academy of Fine Arts.
