This book presents a theoretical framework for hermeneutic musical analysis, enriched with numerous practical examples. Joan Grimalt s latest work emphasises discursive and dramaturgical dimensions, grounded in hermeneutical principles. Building on his previous volume, Mapping Musical Signification (Springer, 2020), which explores different groupings of musical signs and references, this book adopts a praxis-oriented approach, addressing issues of interpretation in common-practice repertoire.
Structured in four chapters, the book opens with an overview of its theoretical foundations. Chapter One, Mapping Musical Representation, reviews musical hermeneutics and introduces a theory of music as represented discourse. Chapter Two extends topic analysis by proposing a new classification of musical topoi. Chapter Three, Mapping Musical Rhetoric, examines aspects such as prosody and the tone of the discourse. The final chapter, Mapping Musical Dramaturgy, investigates minimal dramaturgical units and offers a range of dramaturgical archetypes. An appendix provides a practical analytical model -outlined in five steps- as a methodological tool for hermeneutic analysis.
Grimalt's most important contribution probably lies in the reconnection between analysis and performance, which had become disconnected in conservatories during the past century. This hermeneutical transformation can be historically explained by the recovery of the traditional concept of "music as discourse," which was prevalent until approximately the world wars.
Joan Grimalt jgrimalt@esmuc.cat Tel. +34670223535 Orchestra conductor (Vienna University), philologist (Barcelona University), pianist (Conservatory of Barcelona), PhD in musicology (Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona) with a thesis on Gustav Mahler, supervised by the late Raymond Monelle and inspired by Constantin Floros's research. After a decade devoted exclusively to performance interpretation, primarily conducting opera in Central Europe, he has since combined practical musicianship with teaching and research at the Escola Superior de Música de Catalunya. Joan's main field of research is Music Hermeneutics, especially those approaches with ties to literature and language: rhetoric, poetic metres, musical dramaturgy, and intertextuality. As a conductor, his former involvement with the Vienna Volksoper (1995-1997) stands out. Grimalt is a member of the international research group on Musical Signification, led by Eero Tarasti, with contributions by Robert Hatten and Márta Grabócz. He also organized the latest conference, held at his school in Barcelona. He has presented and published most of his articles in the conference proceedings of this group. In his compendious Mapping Musical Signification (Springer, 2020), Joan synthesizes his colleagues' and his own research on musical meaning into an original contribution for scholars and students. Grimalt's professional career has two complementary sides. Until his appointment as a full professor at the Conservatoire in Barcelona (ESMUC), where he teaches Analysis at all levels from freshmen to master's and doctoral students, Joan was mainly a performer. He conducted primarily opera and operetta in Central Europe and in Spain, but also many symphonic concerts. Grimalt has worked his whole life with singers, up to this day, with a special emphasis on German Lieder. On the other hand, teaching and doing research has helped him more fully explain his discoveries as a performer. The same quest for meaning that leads a performer with a desire for communication has led Grimalt's research on hermeneutics and rhetorical issues in music. Both activities have been enriching each other for decades now.
