CHAPTER 2
EXPLORING BRUSHES
You can get to brushes in a few different places. You will learn about these choices and their benefits in this part.
3D Sculpting Brushes Menu
You can make almost anything with the brushes in the 3D Sculpting Brushes menu. They are the most important and widely used brushes that come with ZBrush. To get to the 3D Sculpting Brushes menu, press B:
This menu is useful because it is organized by letter and is easy to find. It also lets you quickly look through a lot of brushes. Then you can just left-click on one to choose it.
LightBox Brush Library
While using ZBrush, you can find brush files in the LightBox Content Library that hold extra brushes that you can load. To get to LightBox in ZBrush, press “,” on your keyboard:
These folders have groups of brushes that are based on the effect or type of brush. Although you may not need these brushes as much as the brushes in the main brush menu, it is still helpful to know that they are there so you can use them if you need to. Note: Keep in mind that these brushes are saved on your computer. The folder can be found here, based on how you installed ZBrush 2025: C:/Program Files/Pixologic/ZBrush 2025/ZBrushes. Some of the most useful and widely used brush groups and the types of brushes that belong to them are shown below:
  • Insert-IMM: This folder has different IMM brushes that you can use to add geometry. These brushes can be used to make simple shapes or more complicated models like dragon bones or train parts. Some of these brushes can be useful tools.
  • Scales: You can use these brushes to give animals like snakes, fish, and even dragon scales.
  • Smooth: You can use these brushes to make your mesh smooth in a certain way. Because of how they are made, these brushes can only change some parts of the picture and leave the rest alone. For instance, the smooth peaks brush makes convex forms smooth while keeping cracks sharp. This makes a unique effect that can be used for some surface effects.
Custom user interface brushes
The user interface (UI) is another place to keep brushes. If you already have a custom UI, it may have some brushes that you use a lot and find easy to get to, but you'd like to be able to get to them faster. This is what your brush-based custom UI might look like:
Your custom UI can become too crowded if you add too many brushes, but this is a great way to get to brushes even faster than opening the main brush menu.
Hotkeys for brushes
With hotkeys, you can get to tools just as quickly as or faster than the ones you store on your custom UI. To give a brush a hotkey, just move your mouse over its name, press Ctrl + Alt, and then press the key you want to use as the brush's shortcut. For that reason alone, this is a great choice: hitting a key is a quick way to get to a brush, and it doesn't take up any space on your UI. By now, you should know where to find brushes and where might be the best place to store a certain brush. We will talk about some of the most important brushes for digital sculptors in the next part.
Exploring important brushes
There are a lot of useful tools that come with ZBrush, but most people will only use a small number of them. As an alternative to trying them out yourself, I'll show you some of the most famous and powerful brushes and give you examples of how they work:
  • ClayBuildup: This is great for general sculpting, and it's easy to add or take away. This brush can do a lot.
  • CurveMultiTube: This tool is great for quickly adding structures in the shape of tubes to a model.
  • CurveStrapSnap: This is the best way to add belts or other similar items that wrap around a model.
  • DamStandard: Make sharp edges or cuts (this brush is another must-have for sculpting).
  • HPolish: This tool can even out an uneven surface and make edges sharper.
  • IMM Primitives: This lets you add primitive shapes. This is a quick and easy way to add shapes for a variety of uses.
  • Inflate: This function can be used to make objects bigger and shapes bigger. As we already talked about, this brush is also great for fixing thin DynaMesh meshes.
  • Move: Great for changing big parts of the shape without changing the fine details on the surface.
  • Smooth: The Smooth brush is one of the most important ones because it lets you get rid of details or forms that you don't want in meshes.
  • Standard: This brush is great for making smaller changes and is especially good for making shapes and details look better.
  • TrimDynamic: This feature lets you quickly cut off shapes that stick out sharply. It's great for making things that have many flat surfaces or pieces that have been chipped off, like rocks or metal that has been damaged.
  • MoveTopological: This moves the surface you put it on, and the area it affects isn't just the area close to the brush stroke. The following image shows the beginning of a sub tool that has two spheres: 2 is the regular Move brush, which is used on the left sphere but also affects the right sphere because it has a large brush radius; and 3 is the MoveTopological brush, which moves the mesh based on the continuous mesh surface instead of just the distance from the brush stroke to the mesh:
This is only the sphere (on the left) that was influenced by the brush stroke because there are no shapes connecting the spheres. Because of this, this brush is great for moving parts that don't affect close models but do affect different ones.
  • ZModeler: This brush lets you do poly modeling on your shapes, which makes it great for making flat, non-living things like outfits, accessories, and costumes.
I hope that the brushes we talked about will help you with your work and make you want to try out some of the new brushes you are now familiar with. Also, keep in mind that the selection and masking brushes are very popular and useful. Even though the brushes that come with ZBrush are good enough for most tasks, there are times when you need to change them to get a certain look for some reason.
Exploring brush modes
The brush modes decide how the strokes will be put on the mesh. On the left side of the canvas, where the main brush features are shown, you can find the icon for this feature:
You can choose a brush by clicking on the brush icon in the top left corner. You can get to the Brush Library by clicking on it. The brush mode is set by the second icon. The ClayBuildup brush is in FreeHand mode by default. If you click on the icon, you can see other modes that you can use. Let's look at what happens with the same brush in each mode (I'll use the ClayBuildup brush):
  • Dots: When this mode is used, the chosen Alpha is applied very quickly, many times along a brush stroke. For a round Alpha, this makes a line that goes on forever:
  • DragRect: This mode lets you apply the Alpha once when you click on the shape, and you can also change its size.
  • FreeHand: This mode lets you draw on the surface and works like the Dots mode but uses Alphas at a high frequency.
  • Spray: This brush changes the size, placement, and strength of the Alpha that was chosen as it moves across the mesh. You can change those settings to decide how strong the effect is.
  • DragDot: Just like the DragRect mode, the DragDot mode will use a single copy of the Alpha for each stroke. The Alpha, on the other hand, can be moved across the mesh and put anywhere you want, unlike DragRect. You can't change the Alpha's size once you start drawing; it's based on the draw size.
Now that you have a brush, you can use it with the brush mode you want to be turned on. We'll now look at some brush features that will give you more ways to use them.
Exploring brush features
The Draw palette is where you can change some of the most important brush features, like the brush radius, brush strength, and brush contrast. There are also different Paint and Material modes on the Draw palette. Now let's look at these important...
