This volume examines the iconography of military equipment in the art of the Orthodox milieu in the Middle Ages. The authors address various problems, such as the veracity of representations of military equipment, the issue of presence of archaisms in the artwork, and the meaning and symbolism of armour in the Byzantine world.

Piotr Ł. Grotowski, Ph.D. (2003), Jagiellonian University, is Assistant Professor of Art History at the Pontifical University of John Paul II in Cracow. He has published monographs, translations and articles on Byzantine art, including Arms and Armour of the Warrior Saints: Tradition and Innovation in Byzantine Iconography (Brill, 2010).
