Mit ihren karnevalesken Performances, die an mittelalterliche Mysterien- und Fasnachtsspiele erinnern und Themen aus der Kunstgeschichte sowie der Pop-Kultur aufgreifen, wurde die englische Künstlerin Monster Chetwynd (*1973 London) international bekannt, obzwar sie sich in den 2000er Jahren auch als Spartacus oder Marvin Gaye Chetwynd einen Namen gemacht hatte. 2012 ist sie als erste Performance-Künstlerin für den renommierten Turner-Preis nominiert worden und besetzt bis heute mit ihren Arbeiten eine der wichtigsten Positionen im Feld der zeitgenössischen Performance. Chetwynds künstlerisches Werk umfasst allerdings weit mehr: Sie arbeitet mit Malerei und Skulptur, mit Installationen und Filmen. Ihre künstlerische Praxis ist dabei geprägt durch den Aufruf und die Kombination unterschiedlichster kulturell fundierter Quellen. Sie schafft Neues, verbindet dabei Humor auch mit Neugierde und sucht nach Kollaborationen – das sind die markantesten Merkmale ihres Werks. Die Ausstellung im Kunsthaus Zürich zeigt nun erstmals umfassend Monster Chetwynds Schaffen in der Schweiz. Über 60 Arbeiten aus den letzten 25 Jahren werden Teil einer immersiven Ausstellungsarchitektur. Das Buch zur Ausstellung »The Trompe-l’œil Cleavage« entfaltet in einer mit der Künstlerin abgestimmten ästhetischen Wirkweise die Vielfalt ihres Werkes. The English artist Monster Chetwynd (b. 1973 in London) rose to international fame with her carnivalesque performances, reminiscent of medieval mysteries and carnival games, that draw on themes from art history and popular culture. In 2012, she was the first performance artist to be nominated for the prestigious Turner Prize, and to this day her work occupies one of the most influential positions in the field of contemporary performance. Chetwynd’s artistic work, however, encompasses much more: she works with painting and sculpture, installations and films. Her artistic practice is informed by the invocation and combination of a wide range of culturally based sources. She creates something new, often combining humor with curiosity, and seeks out collaborations – these are the most striking characteristics of her work. The exhibition at Kunsthaus Zürich is the first comprehensive presentation of Monster Chetwynd’s work in Switzerland. More than sixty pieces from the last twenty-five years are on display in an immersive exhibition architecture. The book accompanying the exhibition presents the diversity of the artist’s work in an aesthetic form that has been carefully coordinated with the artist. Première artiste « performatrice » à avoir été nominée pour le célèbre prix Turner en 2012, elle occupe encore aujourd’hui une position de premier plan dans le domaine de la performance contemporaine. L’œuvre de Chetwynd est cependant beaucoup plus large : elle travaille avec la peinture et la sculpture, les installations et les films. Sa pratique artistique est marquée par l’appel et l’association des sources culturelles les plus diverses. Elle crée du nouveau, joint l’humour à la curiosité et cherche des collaborations – telles sont les caractéristiques les plus significatives de son travail. L’exposition à la Kunsthaus Zürich présente pour la première fois l’ensemble de sa création en Suisse. Plus de 60 œuvres des 25 dernières années y sont inclues à une architecture immersive, tandis que l’ouvrage qui accompagne l’exposition « Trompe-l'œil Cleavage » déploie la diversité de son travail sur un mode esthétique convenu avec l’artiste.
