Fred Herzog in top form. His images from the heydayof Kodachrome photography are legendary: streetshots of the 1950s and 1960s bathed in warm red-orangetones, precise observations of people and theirmovements in the city. Often poetic, sometimes witty,always from a respectful distance, yet with an intimateatmosphere. Herzog, who lived in Vancouver from 1953,created a colorful monument to the city. He also traveledto the United States, Barbados, Curaçao, Guatemala,and Mexico, always with his Leica in his luggage.At a time when professional photography relied almostexclusively on black and white, Herzog's position issomething special. These photographs were selectedby Andy Sylvester, Special Trustee of the Estate of FredHerzog in conjunction with Equinox Gallery, and continuehis important legacy.
Fred Herzog (1930-2019), who grew up in Stuttgart, Germany,immigrated to Vancover, Canada, in 1953, where he initiallyworked as a medical photographer. He later taught at the Universityof British Columbia and Simon Fraser University. He hashad major solo exhibitions in Berlin, New York, Paris, Toronto, andVancover. Hatje Cantz recently published Modern Color (2017)and Black and White (2022).
In Stuttgart aufgewachsen, ließ sich FRED HERZOG (1930-2019) 1953 in Vancouver nieder, wo er als medizinischer Fotograf arbeitete. Erst digitale Pigmentdruckverfahren ermöglichten ihm in den frühen 2000er-Jahren die Farbintensität der mit seiner Leica aufgenommenen Kodachrome-Dias wiederzugeben. Seine farbfotografische Pionierleistung wurde mit seiner ersten großen Einzelausstellung in der Vancouver Art Gallery im Jahr 2007 bekannt und erlangte große internationale Anerkennung.
