The book fuses together narratological analysis with musicological analysis, considering the influences on Brown’s music and the way that words and music portray protagonists, narrative, relationships and identities across his works. The final chapter gives comparative analysis to garner a portrait of Jason Robert Brown as an artist.

Rebecca Applin Warner has been a freelance composer for theatre for 17 years, primarily writing musicals. She has taught on the Musical Theatre Writing Masters degree at Goldsmiths, University of London, UK and the Musical Theatre Writing module at the Royal Central School of Speech and Drama, UK. Previous publications include chapters in The Musical Theatre Composer as Dramatist (Methuen Drama), The Oxford Handbook of the British Musical and Reframing the Musical as well as publication in the Studies in Musical Theatre journal. She sits on the steering committee of the British Musical Theatre Research Institute.
