„Je älter ich werde, desto stärker zieht es mich in die Landschaft, in der ich aufgewachsen bin: Gebüsche, Stauden, hie und da ein Wäldchen von kleinen Föhren und Birken. Es gibt noch ein paar solche Gegenden rund um Wien; sie erinnern an die Savanne, und ich hatte immer geglaubt, dass es sich um Überbleibsel jener mythischen Ursprungslandschaft der Menschheit handelt. Aber bald habe ich Asphalt unter dem Gras gefunden, Pflaster unter einer dünnen Schicht Moos, und die Felsen, so pittoresk über die Landschaft verstreut, waren aus Stahlbeton.
Diese Orte sind also schon einmal bewohnt gewesen, sogar industrialisiert oder zivilisiert, und ich habe in keine ferne Vergangenheit geschaut, sondern in die Zukunft: eine sanfte und romantische Apokalypse. So wird das ganze Land aussehen, die Dörfer und Städte, die Felder und Straßen, wenn wir Menschen nicht mehr da sein werden. Wir werden das nicht mehr sehen, deshalb fotografiere ich es schon jetzt.“ Michael Nagl

“Growing older, I have been drawn back to the kind of landscape that I grew up in: flat scrubland, weeds, bushes, groves of small trees. There still are a few places like that around Vienna, remainders, I believed, of that mythic original landscape, reminiscent of the savanna, where humankind evolved. But soon I found asphalt beneath the grass; paving under a thin layer of moss; and those rocks, picturesquely strewn across the plain, were of reinforced concrete.
The places I photographed had been inhabited, civilized, industrialized even, and I was looking not into the past, but into the future: a gentle and romantic kind of apocalypse.
The entire land will look like this, cities and villages, streets and fields, when humankind will be gone.
