Inspired by this symposium we would like to rethink and provide an insight about the use of new technologies in architecture and design. The consideration spans over (but not limited to) computational design, virtual experience, digital fabrication, artificial intelligence and sustainability/environment. Readers of the proceedings will benefit from discussions on how adoption of new technologies can benefit the Construction Industry rather than just for the sake of leveraging new technologies. The book targets scholars and high-education level students, as well as Ph.D.s which research falls into the broad realm of digital design.
Giancarlo Di Marco is an Architectural Engineer and an expert in Computational Design and Digital Fabrication. With more than twenty years of experience in the Architecture, Engineering and Product Design industries, he serves the Department of Architecture as Senior Associate Professor and he is Director of the Master Program, Academic Director of the Design FabLab and member of the Design School Internationalization Committee. His main research area is lightweight structures and he is actually leading three granted research projects, two focusing on structural optimization of high-performance concrete 3D-printed elements and the third on new pedagogical approaches to teaching digital fabrication for design. He is the author of the book Simplified Complexity - Method for Advanced NURBS Modeling with Rhinoceros®, and his research has been published in scientific journals and conference proceedings in various international events in Europe, Asia and America.
Davide Lombardi is a chartered architect and scholar, holding a degree in Architecture with honors (BA+MA, Università degli Studi Gabriele d'Annunzio) and a Ph.D. degree in Architecture (School of Advanced Studies Gabriele d'Annunzio). He currently serves the Department of Architecture by holding the role as Head of Department. His interest in computational tools and strategies led him to investigate the impact of cutting-edge techniques in the field of blockchain technologies applied to the AEC industry, robotic fabrication and gamification of architectural education. His research has been published in books, journals, conference proceedings and via key-note speeches in international universities (Oxford-Brookes Rome Visiting School, Nanjing University, Beijing Institute of Fashion and Technology, Royal University of Bhutan, UDLAP Puebla). He has been awarded a number of national and international grants for his research (Italy, Scotland, China).
Mia Tedjosaputro is an Indonesian architect, holding a Ph.D. degree from the University of Nottingham, United Kingdom, in 2018. She serves the department as deputy head and is also the Digital Design and Fabrication (DDF) Lab coordinator. Her main research interests are digital design cognition, augmented reality for bamboo architecture and circular design.
