for SATB unaccompanied
Written in an a cappella style with scat accompaniment, A Tree is a Song is a joyful celebration of the affinity between trees and how wisdom can be passed on ‘as a melody from tree to tree’. McDowall’s arrangement embodies the interconnection in the text as the parts imitate and respond to each other.

Written in an a cappella style with scat accompaniment, A Tree is a Song is a joyful celebration of the connections and affinity found in nature and how wisdom and knowledge can be passed on 'as a melody from tree to tree'. McDowall's setting of Heather Lane's text embodies the theme of connection as the parts imitate and respond to each other, sharing in the heartwood's song.

Cecilia McDowall has been described by the International Record Review as having a 'communicative gift that is very rare in modern music. An award-winning composer, McDowall is often inspired by extra-musical influences, and her choral writing combines rhythmic vitality with expressive lyricism. Her music has been commissioned, performed, and recorded by leading choirs, among them the BBC Singers, The Sixteen, and Oxford and Cambridge choirs and is regularly programmed at prestigious festivals in Britain and abroad. In 2017 McDowall was selected for an Honorary Fellow award by the Royal School of Church Music.
