Around these trials, they fostered an artistic sanctuary in their home near Toulon for leading creative spirits of the day. A trip to Provence was the catalyst for the painter's development into an outstanding colourist, who painted landscapes, interiors, portraits and still lifes. Bernard Denvir (1917 - 1994) was a distinguished art critic who edited the newspaper Art in the 1950s, was Editor of Art and Artists and President of the British Section of the International Association of Art Critics. He is the author of numerous monographs and books on European painting and has written frequently for Art International, Horizon, Gazette des Beaux-Arts, Burlington Magazine and Art Monthly.
