Using painting, drawing, collage, found materials, language, and type, Greg Colson has developed an idiosyncratic body of work devoted to the poetry and humor of everyday objects, social patterns, and cultural habits, particularly our cultural obsession with efficiency, data, and analysis of every kind.

14 Day Juice Challenge is the first book in a series that will provide, in its totality, a broad survey of Greg Colson’s oeuvre. Each book in the series is structured as a poem that has both literary and visual dimensions. The poem proper that opens each book serves as an entryway into a selection of visual works, and as one progresses through, a network of associations builds between the visual works and the initial poem.

With a focus on Colson’s pie charts and aerial views of arena architecture, 14 Day Juice Challenge presents fourteen works that revolve around the pursuit of numbers and quantification. The book concludes with a discussion between the artist and publisher, Nina Holland, about the poetic form and its relationship to Colson’s visual work.

The first five books will be released every six to twelve months beginning with 14 Day Juice Challenge. Each of the books stands on its own as a complete work, leaving the reader free to collect the books as desired, choosing one, several favorites, or all in the series.

This book was printed on Little Steidl’s Roland 200 offset-lithographic printing press using a wet-on-dry process. One color is printed individually and allowed to dry for twenty-four hours before the next color is printed. Each sheet passes through the press ten times over a sequence of ten days.

Greg Colson (b. 1956 in Seattle, Washington) grew up in Bakersfield, California and lives and works in Los Angeles. He earned a BA from California State University, Bakersfield and an MFA from Claremont Graduate University. Colson’s works are held in the collections of the Whitney Museum of American Art, New York; the Museum of Modern Art, New York; the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York; the Hirshhorn Museum and Sculpture Garden, Washington, D.C.; the Museum of Contemporary Art, Los Angeles; the Los Angeles County Museum of Art; the Hammer Museum, Los Angeles; the Thomas Ammann Collection, Zurich; the Panza Collection, Varese, Italy; the Rosenkranz Collection, Berlin; and Moderna Museet, Stockholm. His work has been the subject of solo exhibitions internationally at Sperone Westwater, New York; Konrad Fischer Galerie, Dusseldorf; Cardi Gallery, Milan; Galleria Gian Enzo Sperone, Rome; William Griffin Gallery, Los Angeles; Baldwin Gallery, Aspen; Thomas Park Gallery, Seoul; Krannert Art Museum, Urbana-Champaign; Kunsthalle Lophem, Bruges; and the Lannan Museum, Lake Worth.

Nina Holland is a Los Angeles native whose work spans all aspects of bookmaking, including design, typography, imaging, printing, and binding. She studied both music and visual art from early childhood, and earned her BA in liberal arts from Sarah Lawrence College. She is the author of Glen Seator: Making Things Moving Places, a 14-volume catalogue raisonné of the sculptural work of Glen Seator (Steidl) for which she received major awards from the Andy Warhol Foundation, the Graham Foundation for Advanced Studies in the Fine Arts, the Judith Rothschild Foundation, and the Peter and Carmen Lucia Buck Foundation. She has worked in creative collaboration with the German publisher Gerhard Steidl since 2002. In 2011, Holland moved to Göttingen to master the art of offset lithographic printing at Steidl and today carries the Steidl name and working tradition into a second generation as the director of the Little Steidl publishing house. Holland's work comes out of long-term collaborations with contemporary artists, including Lawrence Weiner, Chuck Close, John Baldessari, Graciela Iturbide, Jan von Holleben, Robert Therrien, Anthony Wilson, Glen Seator, and Greg Colson, among others.
