Als das Slanted-Team von einem Projekt erfuhr, das rheinland-pfälzisches Design in Ruanda präsentiert - und umgekehrt, wollten sie selbst einen Blick auf die aufstrebende Kreativszene werfen, um mehr darüber zu erfahren. Als sie im Februar 2019 dann nach Ruanda reisten, beeindruckte sie das Land in vielerlei Hinsicht: Plastiktüten? Die sind dort seit 2004 absolut verboten. Das Umweltmanagement wird von der politischen auf die lokale Ebene dezentralisiert, was zu einem breiten Verständnis darüber führt, wie die Umwelt erhalten werden kann. So ist beispielsweise am letzten Samstag im Monat jeder Bürger verpflichtet, die Straßen sauber zu machen. Seit diesem Jahr dürfen keine Altkleider aus dem Westen mehr nach Ruanda importiert werden - das könnte rund 25.000 neue Arbeitsplätze schaffen und die Textilindustrie floriert. Ruanda hat uns gezeigt, wie man es besser macht!
Die Slanted Special Issue Rwanda präsentiert nun neben einigem “Design-Augenschmaus” auch einige herausragende Persönlichkeiten sowie viele gute Geschichten.

When the Slanted team found out about a project showcasing Rhineland-Palatinatean design in Rwanda–and the other way around, they wanted to take a look at the up-and-coming creative scene there themselves to find out more. As they traveled to Rwanda in February 2019, the country impressed them in many ways: Plastic bags? They are absolutely forbidden there since 2004. Environmental management is being decentralized from the political to the local level, leading to a widespread understanding on how to preserve the environment. On the last Saturday of the month, for example, every citizen is obliged to tidy up the streets. Since this year, no more old clothes from the West may be imported to Rwanda—this could create around 25,000 new jobs and the textile industry is flourishing. Rwanda showed us how it’s done!
The Slanted Special Issue Rwanda now presents a few outstanding personalities as well as many good stories besides some “design eye-candy.”
