By Means of the Sun is a photography project that includes analogue and digital images, taken or simply selected by Andrea Ferrari, made for scientific or creative purposes, produced by a camera or direct chemical modification of the film, objectively clear or almost abstract, and even drawings; drawings that, through the mediation of the lens, themselves turn into photographs. This book deftly reflects the current state of photography, one that is post-digital and postmodern, omnivorous and protean. Andrea Ferrari was born in 1970 and today lives in Milan, where he studied philosophy. He describes his photographic practice as an investigation of language across abstract and figurative themes, and over the last decade has concentrated on four bodies of work: “Wild Window” (2007–14), “Hidden Paper” (2010–15), “The pictures included in this envelope” (2012–13) and “By Means of the Sun” (2015–20). Ferrari’s work is held in numerous public and private collections, and his books include The pictures included in this envelope (2013).
