Im Kritischen Bericht wird die kontinuierliche Verfestigung des Notentextes der mitunter über einen langen Zeitraum entstandenen oder revidierten Werke minutiös aufgeschlüsselt; auch Skizzen und Frühfassungen werden dokumentiert. Die Volksliedmelodien, die einigen Kompositionen zugrunde liegen, finden sich in einem eigenen Anhang samt englischer Übersetzung der Texte.
