Far from being conservative, as Brahms often has been referred to, his symphonies show the composer as a groundbreaking pioneer far ahead of his time. He may not have broken dramatic new ground in the same way as his musical colleagues Liszt and Wagner, who invented new genres. Instead, his innovations took place at the mircro-level – within music’s inner palm. In this respect Brahms was far ahead of his time – and this fact explains what half a century later Arnold Schoenberg regards him as “progressive” and was referring to him for his own compositional theory.
Semyon Bychkov’s love and affection towards the music of Brahms - and here especially the symphonies – goes back to the beginnings of his conducting career and grew within the years. Die Sinfonien Johannes Brahms zeigen nicht zuletzt, wie weit der Komponist davon entfernt war ein Konservativer zu sein, auch wenn er seinen Zeitgenossen immer als solcher galt. Er sprengte nicht die bestehenden Traditionen und erfand neue musikalische Formen. Er konzentrierte sich vielmehr auf die musikalische Bewegung an sich, auf den „Mikro“-Bereich der Musik. Und war damit seinen Zeitgenossen um eine ganze Generation voraus. So beruft sich auch der Meister des Umbruchs, Arnold Schönberg, auf den „progressiven“ Brahms und knüpft an ihn seine eigenen musikalischen Ideen und Innovationen.
Semyon Bychkov, seit 1997 Chefdirigent des WDR Sinfonieorchesters Köln, hat zu der Musik Brahms’ und insbesondere zu den Sinfonien ein sehr persönliches Verhältnis, startete er doch damit im Alter von 17 Jahren seine Dirigentenkarriere. Bychkovs Dirigieren ist geprägt von großer Leidenschaft und Hingabe, die sich auch körperlich äußert. Er verbindet in seiner lyrischen und dennoch kraftvollen Interpretation höchste Emotionalität im besten Sinne mit Intelligenz und technischer Brillanz.
