The mostly edible garden of Babylonstoren in the Drakenstein Valley of the Cape Winelands has become a must-see for all visitors to the region. Not simply because it is beautiful, but because it offers a mesmerising range of experiences to both the day tripper and hotel guest, encompassing history, insight into the workings of a productive farm and food garden, and how the land can be cultivated along diversifi ed yet integrated principles. As co-author Franchesca Watson says, ‘The way Babylonstoren expresses itself visually is inordinately charming. Every material is simple and intrinsic, nothing is smart or clever or tacky, everything is understandable and filled with sincerity; it is a generous place.’ This visually stunning coffee-table book covers every aspect of the 3.5-hectare garden: its design, Cape Dutch history, plants, cultivation methods and the people behind it all.

Trained in horticulture and garden design, Franchesca Watson has undertaken commissions across South Africa and abroad. She has designed gardens for an iconic list of clients and architects, and continues to collaborate on international projects. Over the last 30 years, Franchesca has cultivated a formidable reputation for stylish and sophisticated design. Her mantra is to create timeless and sustainable gardens that balance client brief with an intrinsic sensitivity to site and architecture. She writes a monthly gardening page for Conde Nast House & Garden magazine and has written a book on Stellenberg garden, for which she has designed portions over the last 15 years. As editor, designer, writer and photographer across multiple design-related industries, Heidi Bertish is one of Cape Town’s most green-fingered photojournalists. She has represented South Africa at the Chelsea Flower show, travelled and developed bespoke garden and interior products across Asia and Europe; and currently leads the Conde Nast House & Garden team as editor of all things garden related. Her background in landscape design and degrees in psychology and art history inform her aesthetic and garden thinking. ‘Being immersed in photographing the garden and amazing people at Babylonstoren for over a year has been a privilege,’ says Heidi.
