Originally entitled Musicology, in this work musicians are shown how to perform concertos by Vivaldi and his contemporaries in a way that would be recognized and encouraged by their composers. In addition, the key role of Sir Thomas Beecham as a pioneer in early music receives its proper credit and appreciation.
Denis Stevens has a lifetime of experience including the Philharmonia Orchestra, the BBC (where he served as senior producer of pre-classical music), the RAM, and two Distinguished Professorships in the USA. As co-founder of the Ambrosian Singers and conductor of the Accademia Monteverdiana, he introduced early repertoire to the Proms and to the major European music festivals. His books, music editions and articles demonstrate the breadth and depth of his research. He was appointed a CBE in 1984.
