And they're powerfully practical: a pocket at the back for receipts and scraps, two bookmarks and a solid magnetic side flap. These are perfect for personal use and make a dazzling gift. This example features Warwick Goble's Pretty Pair of Wings.
This is one of Goble's illustrations for the 1909 edition of Charles Kingsley's masterpiece The Water Babies, A Fairy Tale for a Land Baby. It shows the fairies fitting a new pair of wings to a young girl. Kingley's story demonstrates the way that children's literature altered fairy traditions. The orphan Tom can only find happiness once he has died and been transformed into a water baby – a reversal of older folk tales where fairies were feared for stealing children away from their families.
