In the Dutch language, Handeling refers to the manual use of a tool (style), but also means action, and is directly associated with the motor activity of the whole body. The performative element of color application was a focus of practical interest for late Rembrandtists such as Arent de Gelder and also figured in Samuel van Hoogstraten’s theory. For the first time, this study examines the theory and practice of Handeling during the period. Handeling bedeutet im Niederländischen, abgesehen von der Handhabung des Instruments (Manier), auch Aktion und ist unmittelbar mit der Motorik und so dem gesamten Körper verbunden. Das prozessuale, performative des Farbauftrags wurde nicht nur in der Praxis der späten Rembrandtisten wie Arent de Gelder, sondern auch in der Theorie Samuel van Hoogstratens thematisiert. Die Publikation untersucht erstmals Handeling in Theorie und Praxis der Zeit.
