Near-infrared (NIR) spectroscopy offers a non-destructive and portable solution for many problems associated with heritage material identification and characterisation. This book is intended as reference to this emerging technique.
Near infrared (NIR) spectroscopy offers a non-destructive, non-invasive, and portable solution for many problems associated with heritage material identification and characterisation. This book is intended as reference to this emerging technique for students and professionals wishing to adopt this ideal tool for rapid art and heritage collection surveys or for the conservation of heritage materials. The editors have brought together contributors at the forefront of this new technique, presenting its application to a wide range of cultural, historic, and archaeological materials.

Dr Matija Strlic FRSC, read chemistry at University of Ljubljana, Slovenia, and completed his PhD in 2000. He moved to University College London in 2007, where he is currently Senior Lecturer at UCL Centre for Sustainable Heritage, specializing heritage science, i.e. cross-disciplinary science for cultural heritage. His particular interest is in the development of non-destructive analytical tools for characterisation of heritage materials and environments. From 2005-2007, he coordinated the EU 6FP project SurveNIR, on the development of an NIR spectrometer for historic paper collections. He published more than 100 scientific papers on the topic of heritage science, and is Course Director of the MRes Heritage Science at UCL Centre for Sustainable Heritage. Tom Fearn is Professor of Applied Statistics in the Department of Statistical Science at UCL and the current Head of Department (a position he also held from 2002-2007). He has a BA in Mathematics from Oxford, an MSc in Statistics from Imperial College and a PhD in Statistics from UCL. Before joining the Statistics Department at UCL in 1989 he worked for 11 years at the Flour Milling and Baking Research Association in Chorleywood. He published more than 100 scientific papers in the field of statistical analysis, predominantly in multivariate data analysis.
