Developers and entrepreneurs will learn to prototype basic consumer products, select appropriate materials and processes for volume manufacture, and reverse-engineer existing products to understand the design decisions behind them. The book covers the product development process, from discovery, benchmarking, and ideation, to design, prototyping, pilot production, and volume manufacturing. While focusing on practical application of concepts, rather than abstract theory, readers from any background will learn the basics of material science, solid mechanics, and other key mechanical engineering principles along the way.

Will McLeod is an engineer, inventor, and serial entrepreneur who founded a smart-glass technology company, SmarterShade, and cofounded a home automation hardware company, Keen Home. Will has studied entrepreneurship and optics to complement his M.S. (technology commercialization), B.S.(Mechanical Engineering), and B.A.(Industrial Design) degrees from the University of Notre Dame. Will has been successful in winning more than a dozen business plan competitions, federal and local grants that have totaled more than $2M in funding. He has served as the Principal Investigator on three NSF grants and is the lead inventor on two issued patents. He has become an expert on hardware tech start-ups. Will is also a fellow of the Startup Leadership Program, a selective global training program and lifetime network for outstanding founders and innovators, a Techstars alumn, and MassChallenge winner.
