MacBoudica is a series of black and white drawings that follow the story of Shakespeare's Macbeth but with a re-imagined lead character - a female celtic warrior.
MacBoudica came about because I wanted to direct a version of Shakespeare’s Macbeth with a female Celtic warrior, like Boudica, as the title character, a woman instead of a man. I imagined a Celtic twilight where myth and reality merged, where female warriors still held equality with male. Because I thought it might be a long time before I had the means to put on my theatrical production I started to create visual-memos to myself about the world I was imagining g for the play. These are those memos – some of them started as sketches and I have reworked them and also altered some of them at a later point. They are not set and costume designs but a way of keeping the spirit of what I wanted , on stage, alive in my head while I waited for my moment.
I have put with each drawing the act, scene and quote that inspired it. Not every scene is depicted. At the end of this book there is a synopsis of the play Macbeth for anyone not familiar with the play., I have also written a bit more about the imagery and inspiration for some of the images
