Live At The Basement
Das „Basement“ in Sydney, Australien, ist ein gemütlicher Club mit niedrigen Decken. Der Geruch von Tabak und Whisky sitzt tief in den Wänden. Jimmy Barnes war in diesen „heiligen Hallen“ nur für eine Nacht zu Gast mit seiner Soul-Revue, aber brachte den Raum förmlich zum Zerbersten. So sollte es sein. Es ist, als ginge man zu einem R&B-Konzert, bei dem es darum geht, ganz loszulassen, höllisch abzutanzen, bis man einfach nicht mehr weiter tanzen kann.
In dieser Zeit der Synthesizer, Lichtshows, Videoclips und Sampler ist eine Rockdarbietung oft nichts weiter als ein Abklatsch von etwas, das im Aufnahmestudio entstanden ist. Das gilt gleichermaßen für R&B. Die Kunst, etwas rüberzubringen – unverfälscht – ist fast verloren gegangen. Für diese Show hatte Jimmy eine Gruppe zusammengestellt, die den Groove hielt, auch wenn er sich dazu musikalisch so richtig austobte. Mehr Live-Gefühl als bei Jimmy Barnes im “Basement” geht nicht.

embedded into the walls. For one night only Jimmy Barnes brought his soul revue into this hallowed room, and frankly tore it apart.This is the real thing. This is like going to an R&B joint where the purpose of the exercise is to totally cut loose, to dance with the devil’s music until you just can’t dance no more. In these days of synthesisers, light shows, video clips and sampling, a rock show is often just a replication of something made in a recording studio. This is as true of R&B. The art of doing it for real, of getting to the elemental rawness, has become almost lost. For this show Jimmy assembled a band that could keep the groove still in the pocket, even as he broke all hell loose on top. It doesn’t get any more live than Jimmy Barnes at the Basement.
