Learn how to read with decodable and engaging fiction for older readers who are interested in graphic novels and at the early stages of reading.

This graphic novel-style series for 9-12 year-olds features eight decodable stories designed for older readers who can read simple CVC words.

Eight stories bound into one graphic novel format follow the adventures of a diverse group of teenage friends in a skateboarding team called the Sun Cats. Each story practises the initial sounds of the alphabet at CVC-level text.

For example:
Chapter 1: s a t i m
Chapter 2: n o p
Chapter 3: b c g h
Chapter 4: d e f v
Chapter 5: k l r u
Chapter 6: j w z
Chapter 7: x y ff ll ss zz
Chapter 8: All initial sounds, CVC

Sun Cats shares the same phonic progression as Phonic Books Moon Dogs and Phonic Books Moon Dogs Extras Set 1 and can be used in parallel to consolidate phonemic knowledge and reading skills.

This beginner reader series features:

Truly decodable text to allow independent reading, ideal for reluctant readers.
Reading material aimed at children aged 9-12.
Common CVC words that are gradually introduced in each book.

This pack of 8 decodable books features:

‘How to Use This Book’ guidance page, including information about the new sounds introduced and important notes on the sound.
Decodable graphic novel story pages.
Reading practice word lists and character art.
Questions for discussion.

What is phonics?

Phonics is a way of teaching children to read by understanding the sounds that individual letters make and blending them to make a word. Children can learn to read using this skill to decode new words. Phonic Books specialises in decodable, systematic books supporting this structured literacy instruction.

Clair Wilson is a former SEN teacher and co-founder of Phonic Books. She specialises in writing engaging decodable stories for reading catch up. Cynthia Paul is an Indian-American illustrator specialising in storytelling through graphic novel illustrations.
