An oversized, slipcase-housed, art book edition of A WONDER BOOK, Nathaniel Hawthorne's collection of adapted Greek myths, now illustrated with a suite of paintings from the renowned Spanish artist Das Pastoras and an introduction from Academy Award winning filmmaker Guillermo Del Toro.

In the summer of 1851, directly off the success of The Scarlet Letter, Hawthorne decided to update a series of classical myths for a young contemporary audience — to remove their “cold touch of marble” and bring them into the modern era. The book become an instant classic, paving the way for the success of fairy tales and legends for young readers throughout the 19th century and beyond. Das Pastoras, the poetic and painterly Galician visual artist, brings his vivid and fantastical vision to these larger than life tales, presented with more drama and thunder than ever before. Original essays from Guillermo Del Toro, Jose Villarubia and Kate Bernheimer explore the many meanings and visions contained within.

A stunning new entry in Beehive Books award-winning Illuminated Editions series, this volume is housed in a shimmering die-cut sculpturally embossed slipcase, printed on uncoated acid-free paper, and published in an oversized 9x12" trim format.

Nathaniel Hawthorne (1805-64) was an American novelist and short-story writer. He was born in Salem, Massachusetts, and graduated from Bowdoin College. His first novel, Fanshawe, was published anonymously in 1828, followed by several collections of short stories, including Twice-Told Tales and Mosses from an Old Manse. His later novels include The Scarlet Letter, The House of Seven Gables, The Blithedale Romance, and The Marble Faun. Julio Martínez Pérez is a Spanish comic artist who works under the pen name Das Pastoras. He published his first professional work in a special 1983 issue of El Víbora and co-founded the fanzine Zero, which published other renowned artists of his generation. In 2007 he was hired to draw Castaka, a new cycle of Alexandro Jodorowsky's Metabarons saga. In addition to the French market, Das Pastoras has been working for US comic books since the late 2000s. Guillermo del Toro is the acclaimed director of The Shape of Water, Pan’s Labyrinth, Pacific Rim, and Crimson Peak. His Strain novels are international best sellers. He lives in Los Angeles with his wife, kids, dog, cat, and rat.
