★ “Barrett’s delightful story, told in rhyming couplets, is about friends who don’t hesitate to help a friend in need.... Coming to the aid of a friend benefits everyone in this gratifying tale” – Booklist, starred review

The tiny baker offers sweets, a chalkboard list of daily treats…
Her customers line up in rows. Antennae wave well-bred hellos.

Insect customers clamor to dine at the tiny baker’s cafe to get a taste of her daily sweets. Her kitchen is always abuzz, yet pristine, with whisks whisking and mixers whirring. When the ladybug pastry chefs get an urgent call to swarm away, the kitchen is left a disaster! The oven’s smoking. Kettle glows. The souffle batter overflows. But the tiny baker soon learns the power of friendship and community in a time of need.

Hayley Barrett believes ants are beautiful, admirable creatures and she’s just crazy about bees. She often transports roving insects back outside, and she thinks you should, too. Hayley lives near Boston, USA, with a fluffy Havanese named Quill. Her two terrific children have grown and flown, but they come home often for tea and cookies. You can learn more about Hayley and her books, including Babymoon, What Miss Mitchell Saw, and Girl Versus Squirrel, at HayleyBarrett.com. A graduate in illustration from the London College of Printing, Alison Jay has been illustrating children's books for ten years. To create her unique style, she uses alkyd oil paint on paper with a crackling varnish, which gives her illustrations an antique, nostalgic quality. Alison lives and works in London, England.
