This work contains a set of 4 "Alphabet and First Word" books graded by age: 3-4, 4-5, 5-6, and 6-7. Each book includes over 30 activities to help 3 to 4 year-olds develop important skills needed for reading later on. It introduces letter shapes and sounds, and uses rhyme, rhythm and repetition to aid learning. It contains over 60 gold stars to reward and encourage; and 30 fantastic coloured stickers and badges. It is written by former teacher and current children's non-fiction author Louisa Somerville, with expert teacher and consultant, Jean Williams. This "Alphabet and First Words" book has been specially devised to give children preparing for their first years at school a real head start. Children will learn all about the alphabet and initial phonic sounds, both of which are within the foundation years guidelines. With colourful illustrations and fun activities as well as reward sticker and stars, younger children will be able to develop important skills as a first step towards spelling.
Jean Williams is a former head teacher with a huge amount of primary educational experience in the UK spanning from 1960 to the present day. Most recently she has been involved in one-to-one Key Stage tuition with a variety of pupils, including booster classes for children aged 4 through to 7, as well as booster classes for older children. Jean also has a very good knowledge of 4- to 5-year-olds' learning abilities and understands the needs of nursery level children aged 3 and up. Louisa Somerville used to be a primary school teacher, but has now been writing books for children for nearly 20 years. She has written on a wide range of subjects, from aardvarks to ziggurats, as well as poems, activity books and a best-selling anthology of bedtime stories.
