Based on the touring children's musical, this picture book is told in fun rhyming couplets. With bright, playful illustrations and a word count of just over 2000, it is perfect for parents to read to their children before bed - reading time 10-15 minutes, or for young readers to start their reading journey.
The Caterpillar and the Blackbird tells the story
of a bored, strong willed caterpillar that dreams of more in her life than
eating leaves and living on the same bush. She yearns for adventure and to try
new things.

After a chance encounter with a blackbird, the
caterpillar's dreams come true as the blackbird takes her on the journey of a
lifetime. Along the way, they will meet an odd assortment of animals from a
cow, fox, frog, and hedgehog to a troupe of mischievous squirrels watched over
by a wise old owl.

With each encounter, the young caterpillar learns a valuable life lesson.

But the most important lesson of all for the young
caterpillar is the value of true friendship as she and the blackbird form an
unlikely and unbreakable bond that will see her through her wondrous
metamorphosis into a beautiful butterfly.

Each character encounter in his book is a metaphor for our world, told in a fun and accessible way, For example, when meeting the frog, the caterpillar kicks a discarded water bottle's lid into the frog's pond, thus angering the frog who goes on to explain the importance of water and keeping it safe and clean. Or when meeting a timid fox, the caterpillar is told about different kinds of people and personalities. Or how a cow begs the young caterpillar to view her as more than just food on the hoof.

Never preachy, the book is grounded in our world, though in the guise of another.

Though this title is longer than most picture books at just over 2,000 words, it means that children from the very young to 7 or 8 find something special to
enjoy and treasure.

With bright, colourful hand drawn illustrations, it is a book
that is sure to be a treasured addition to any bookshelf.

Author:  Kate O'Hearn Kate O'Hearn was born in Toronto Canada and was mainly raised in the heart of New York City. After living in many cities around the USA, she moved to the United Kingdom. But has since lived in France as well, before settling down on the south coast of England. She studied fashion at school and worked for notable designers such as Calvin Klein and Oleg Cassini. But it was always creative writing that really interested her most. She has written over twenty-one books of which twenty were commercially published. These were middle-grade fantasies that are sold all around the world in eleven different languages. Her main publishers are Hodder Children's and Aladdin - a division of Simon & Schuster, New York. Her most popular book series is Pegasus. Though she has four other series currently in print. The Caterpillar and the Blackbird was first written by Kate as a children's musical and has been performed in theatres in England and as of 2024 is still on stage. It was after the show that Kate went on to write it as a picture book.  She is currently working on a new series of middle-grade books, but is also working on an adult thriller that has garnered some keen interest.    Illustrator:  R. Christopher R. Christoper is a bit of a man of mystery. He prefers to keep a low profile and instead, lets his art speak for him. Though it is known that he's been an artist since he was young. His main interest has always been pen and ink wildlife art - though he has started branching out into children's illustrations which he creates using a mixture of alcohol based markers and watercolour paints. Being a traditionalist, he does not use a computer to create his art. Instead each piece is hand drawn and painted on a matt board which is almost a metre square, making each piece huge. When he signed on to do the cover and interior illustrations for the Caterpillar and the Blackbird, this didn't change. Each piece was too large to scan and had to be photographed. He is currently working on three more children's covers and then will start to work on another children's picture book being written by Kate O'Hearn.
