Ava Skye, Adventurer
Collins (Verlag)
9780008605940 (ISBN)
Ava Skye’s routine is important to her: waking up at 6 o’clock … wearing clothes that don’t itch or feel too tight … eating tomato sandwiches for breakfast and dinner… Doing certain things in the same way helps her feel comfortable, confident and safe. But each week, Ava sets aside a day to experience something new. When she decides to try roller skating, will her fear of the rink prove too daunting a challenge, or will it be her biggest accomplishment yet?
Copper/Band 12 books provide more complex plots and longer chapters that develop reading stamina.
Pages 30 and 31 allow children to re-visit the content of the book, supporting comprehension skills, vocabulary development and recall.
Ideas for reading in the back of the book provide practical support and stimulating activities.
Writing Ava Skye, Adventurer, has been a dream come true for me as an autistic adventurer myself! When I was young, I was always wanting to try new things: exploring the world like Indiana Jones, going on an African safari, sailing across the sea, but since I wasn’t ready to venture out on those explorations quiet yet, I focused on what I could do: smaller, but still exciting things like fishing, canoeing, dance lessons, and horseback riding. My favourite adventure of all was roller skating! Was I worried I’d fall? Yes. Was I really happy to go home to my safe space and family afterward? Definitely. But no matter what, the excitement and triumph I felt on my adventures always outweighed the worry and challenges. I felt proud for getting out of my comfort zone and braving the world. I have kept those memories close all these years later. That’s who I wrote Ava Skye’s story for. The amazingly brave adventurers like you.
