All the activities support the numeracy and literacy frameworks and are designed to be fun as well as educational. Spark Island is an online learning channel for children aged from 3-12. It has been designed, built and tested in close cooperation with teachers and education experts to help practice and develop core skills in a highly interactive and enjoyable way using all the capabilities of digital media. The content of the website is divided into a teacher and parent domain so it is designed to be used in the classroom and at home. Based on Spark Island's learning environment and the appealing characters that live there, this series of activity books will provide lots of opportunities for children to practise essential first skills at home.
The book is aimed at 3-5 year olds and is set in Spark Park (a market town and its surrounding countryside) where children will encounter Farmer Rumtum and his family, or come across Yaks in the fields, Yaboos in the forests, Crocs in the rivers, Turtles in the ponds and the animal-loving Wizards who live in the castle and have a magic sparkler machine! The First Words activity book helps children understand how separate sounds, represented by letters, can be joined together to make words. There are plenty of opportunities for children to practice listening to the separate sounds in simple words -- an important starting point for learning to read and write. Includes helpful tips and advice for parents as well as more things parents and children can do together to reinforce the activities in the book.
