This edition brings together the complete and unabridged text with more than 70 stunning illustrations by Robert Ingpen, each reflecting his unique style and extraordinary imagination in visualising this enchanting story.

Lewis Carroll’s classic tale began as a story told to a group of children on a boating picnic in 1862 and was first published as Alice’s Adventures Under Ground three years later. Its curious effect of half-dream, half-nightmare instantly captured the imagination of both children and adults, and it has been a favourite ever since. Alice’s adventures down the rabbit hole, in particular the strange characters she meets there – the constantly grinning Cheshire Cat, the Mad Hatter and the Queen of Hearts – have become world-famous, as have many of Carroll’s verses.

Throughout the century and a half since its first publication, Alice’s story has been illustrated in many editions. This anniversary edition, published in November 2015, brings together the complete and unabridged text with more than 70 stunning illustrations by Robert Ingpen, each reflecting his unique style and extraordinary imagination in visualising this enchanting story.

Lewis Carroll, the pen name of Charles Lutwidge Dodgson, was born in Cheshire, England. On publication, Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland became a worldwide sensation, beloved by children and adults alike. Robert Ingpen was born in 1936 in Geelong, Australia, and still lives and works nearby in Barwon Heads. He studied illustration art and book design at The Royal Melbourne Institute of Technology. In 1986 he was awarded the Hans Christian Andersen Medal for his contribution to children’s literature and he has been honoured with Membership of the Order of Australia. A world-renowned artist and author, Ingpen has designed, illustrated and written more than one hundred books, including his highly acclaimed series of illustrated Children’s Classics, which have now been published in many editions around the world.
