Let's go to the ball! It's time for the Ugly Bug Ball, and all the ugly bugs are in a buzz! Only, there's one problem: not all of the ugly bugs were invited. Even though Stanley is an ugly stinkbug, he's left out because of his stench! Will he let one bossy bug dictate if he can go, or will he gather his courage and finally meet the bug of his dreams?
Stanley the Stinkbug is upset: he isn't invited to the Ugly Bug Ball because of his stench! Garden meanie Prissy Pray refuses to let Stanley attend the party, and that makes Stanley feel really bad about himself. Will his friends help him see how important every part of him is? Will he let Prissy Pray bully him into not going to the ball? Or will he gather his courage and overcome his fears?
'Morning Prissy,' said Stanley. 'Good morning to you, Stanley Stinkbug. What brings you here so early? I would have expected to see you munching on some of Mrs. Anderson's tomatoes,' Prissy Pray said haughtily. 'So what are you up to? Looks like there's a lot of decorating going on around here,' asked Stanley. 'As you can see. I'm very busy. I don't have time to waste on small talk with you,' Prissy said irritably. Stanley felt himself tense up, and his defenses started to kick in. He hoped she wouldn't smell him. He watched as the Uglies arranged green leaves along the perimeter of the garden, creating a cozy enclosure. His favorite band, The Crazy Crickets, was busy setting up under the canopy of white pearl bushes. 'If you must know, we're getting ready for the Ugly Bug Ball,' Prissy said rather reluctantly. 'Wow! A ball! I've never been to a ball! What should I bring? What time does it start? What day is it? Do you need any more help decorating?' Stanley rambled on and on, and didn't notice the look of disgust Prissy shot his way as she sucked her teeth at him. With her large, bulbous eyes glarng at him, Prissy said, 'Stanley, you can't come, and you're not invited. I mean, you can't seriously think that we'd invite a STINK BUG?! We want the other bugs to actually STAY at the ball, not clear out when your stinky stench drives them away! The fact that you thought you could come is simply ridiculous! Now be on your way! The ball is tomorrow night, and I've got a lot of work to do.' Stanley Stinkbug felt as though his heart had just been crushed.
