It's World War 2 and Jack is learning to fly gliders. Will he pay for his mistakes?
It's the middle of World War II, and Jack dreams of flying real planes in battle. He's the youngest of a group of cadets, chosen by the RAF to learn to fly gliders. But star cadet Cecil Pirbright thinks Jack's too young to learn. And when Jack makes a mistake, Cecil decides that Jack must pay for it.

Republished as a new edition, this book is one of the Shades 2.0 series. This book is perfect for reluctant teens who still want an exciting, unpatronising story that is relevant to their interests and concerns, but who don't want to read a longer novel. With a length of only 6,000 words, and filled with drama, this story will appeal to all reluctant teen readers.

Dennis Hamley was born in Kent in the middle of the Second World War, something which he has described as the biggest shaping experience of his life. In his early career, Dennis was a teacher and he also worked in a teacher training college, as well as assisting at the Open University. He retired from the teaching profession in 1992 to become a full-time writer. Since then he has written over sixty books ranging from plays to non-fiction to short stories. He is now Tutor for Short Fiction for the Oxford Undergraduate Diploma in Creative Writing and also works for the Oxford Editors, providing editorial guidance and support.
