This book will showcase 150 items of the most interesting and beautiful taonga held by the museum, with text explaining their significance and connections. An attached CD will contain a catalogue listing of the complete collection of 5000 items. The structure of the book will reflect the framework of a Maori tauparapara or chant which takes the reader/listener on a journey from the source of the Whanganui River on the central plateau down to the sea. The selected taonga can all be linked into this journey, giving the book a unique Whanganui flavour and authenticity. The items shown vary from paintings, old maps and photographs to steering paddles, woven panels, carved figures, weapons, brooches and pendants and baskets.
